The Stadium Course at Sawgrass Country Club has hosted the Players Championship since 1977 and has only missed the 2020 event due to COVID-19.
Situted in Ponte Vedra Beach the Stadium Course was designed by Pete and Alice Dye, golf course architects, and is thought of as one of the hardest courses in the world.
The course was built specifically to host The Players Championship and is built on swampland. With pot bunkers, long strips of sand marshes lining narrow fairways and lightning fast greens. Designed as the first true “stadium” course to improve the overall on-site fan experience and allows for approx. 36,000 to attend the course.
Benefitting no particular type of game the course has a balanced layout, the most recognisable hole on the course is definitely the signature par 3 island green on the 17th hole.
The par 72 course has 4 par 5’s and 4 par 3’s playing between 6086 and 7352 yards from the various tees. The current record for 4 rounds at The Players Championship goes back to 1994 with Greg Norman scoring 264, 24 under par. Tom Hoge holds the record for a single round scoring 62 in 2023.
