Following in the wake of Korn and within the metal tide, one of the most popular bands in recent years has been Limp Bizkit. It could even be said that with a more conventional approach they have surpassed in popularity the Chicos del Maiz themselves, and have made their way in an astonishing way in an industry in which they rub shoulders with both established stars and prefabricated best-selling artists. There is practically no teenager in the world interested in music, in any of its variants, even the most slimy and commercial, who has not heard of Fred Durst and his band.
Siguendo la estela de Korn y dentro de la marea un metalera, uno de los grupos mas de los últimos años ha sido Limp Bizkit. Incluso se podría decir que con una propuesta algo mas convencional han superado en popularidad a los propios Chicos del Maiz, y se han abierto camino de manera pasmosa en una industria en la que se codean sin problemas tanto con estrellas consagradas como con prefabricados artistas superventas. Prácticamente no hay adolescentes en el mundo algo interesado por la música, en cualquiera de sus variantes, incluso la mas babosa y comercial, que no haya oído hablar de Fred Durst y los suyos.
The red cap of their singer is already almost a symbol of the times in metal. Limp Bizkit have cleverly created an exportable image and a sound that has climbed the charts with lightning speed. Exploring the clichés and the sporty and rapping image of the “metal tracksuit”, they have easily found their way into millions of homes around the world, either through their albums or through the cathodic airwaves like Mtv, where they appear at every moment. Even the most popular music media have echoed their status. Their first album “Three Dollar Bill”, had a moderate impact in the USA with some repercussion in other countries, and made Limp Bizkit's name begin to sound strongly in the changing metal scene.
La gorra roja de su cantante es ya casi un símbolo de los tiempos que corren en el metal. Limp Bizkit han sabido astutamente crearse una imagen exportable y un sonido que ha escalado los charts de manera fulminante. Explortando los cliches y la deportiva y rapera imagen del “chándal metal” se han colado sin problemas en millones de hogares de todo el planeta, bien mediante sus discos o por medio de las ondas catódicas tipo Mtv en donde aparecen a cada instante. Incluso los medios musicales mas populancheros se han hecho eco de su estatus. Su primer trabajo “Three Dollar Bill”, tuvo un impacto moderado en USA con cierta repercusión en otros países, e hizo que el nombre de Limp Bizkit empezara a sonar con fuerza en el cambiante panorama metalico.
Their live shows also caught the attention of many, because at that time they were a band of freaky freaks, who covered George Michael and staged a monstrous giant toilet. Wes Borland, their strange guitarist, continued to enhance their initial image, but the rest, mainly Mr. Durst, gradually settled into a cocky attitude as a result of the impact of “Significant Other”, a record that would take them to the most absolute glory, performing at Woodstock and Reading, and would give them all their fame. Seven million copies sold would propitiate their appearance in a multitude of events - some of them far from metal - and other acts of social life as the spoiled children of the industry.
Sus directos también acaparaban la atención de muchos, pues por aquel entonces eran una banda de freakies chiflados, que versionaba a George Michael y ponía en escena un monstruoso wáter gigante. Wes Borland, su extraño guitarrista, siguió potenciando es imagen inicial, pero el resto, principalmente Mr. Durst, se fueron acomodando paulatinamente en una chulesca actitud fruto del impacto de “Significant Other”, un plástico que les llevaría a la gloria mas absoluta, actuando en Woodstock y Reading, y les daría toda su fama. Siete millones de copias vendidas propiciarían su aparición en multitud de eventos – algunos de ellos alejados del metal – y demás actos de vida social como los niños mimados de la industria.
Some fans won with their first album turned their backs on them because of their loss of authenticity, but their records were now selling by the ton so... Parallel to the effusiveness and loyalty of their fans, they have become one of the most hated bands in the hard rock world due to the aforementioned cocky and arrogant attitude and verbal fights with artists like Trent Reznor or Marilyn Manson. Even so they have been unstoppable, their songs plagued with rapping, heavy riffs and stops with the consequent dry and resonant drumming hit the charts around the world, especially “Nookie”, and “Take A Look Around”, the theme given to the soundtrack of the second part of “Mission Impossible” that would make them even more famous if possible.
Algunos fans ganados con su primer álbum les dieron la espalda por su perdida de autenticidad, pero sus discos se vendían ahora a toneladas asi que… Paralelamente a la efusividad y lealtad de sus seguidores, se han convertido en una de las bandas mas odiadas del mundo del rock duro debido a la actitud chula y arrogante antes mencionada y a peleas verbales con artistas como Trent Reznor o Marilyn Manson. Aun asi se han mostrado imparables, sus canciones plagadas de rapeos, riffs pesados y paradas con el consiguiente golpear seco y resonante de la batería se colaron en las listas de todo el mundo, especialmente “Nookie”, y “Take A Look Around”, el tema cedido a la banda sonora de la segunda parte de “Mision Imposible” que les haría mas famosos aun si cabe.
That song was the ace in the hole they needed to put on the one-metal crown. After it, the way for the arrival of “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water”, their next album, was more than paved, and so this work would arrive without problems to the five million copies sold and still selling at a good pace. Fired egos and wads of cash in the pocket are not a good combination, even less if we add polemics like the death of a fan in a show in Australia or the cancellation of the concert in Festimad last year, earning a good handful of detractors in Hispanic lides even though we will never know the absolute truth if the reason was the band or the organization.
Ese tema fue el as en la manga que necesitaban para ponerse la corona del un metal. Tras el, el camino para la llegada de “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water”, su siguiente álbum, estaba mas que allanado, y asi dicha obra llegaría sin problemas a los cinco millones de copias vendidas y aun vendiendo a buen ritmo. Egos disparados y fajos de billetes en el bolsillo no son una buena combinación, menos si añadimos polemicas como la muerte de una fan en un show en Australia o la cancelación del concierto en Festimad el pasado año, ganándose un buen puñado de detractores en lides hispanas a pesar de que nunca sabremos la verdad absoluta de si la razón la tenia el grupo o la organización.
The recent departure of guitarist Wes Borland has left the band in a creative rut, and the band doesn't seem to have hit the nail on the head with “New Old Songs”, an uninspiring compendium of remixes of their best known songs, which hasn't performed well in the charts or generated much critical acclaim. Maybe then their success is on the way to extinction, but in addition to a healthy bank accounts, Limp Bizkit have enough power to raise their heads and continue to be for quite some time, if things do not turn around again, the portentous band they have proven to be, prejudices aside.
La reciente huida del guitarrista Wes Borland deja a la banda en cuadro y coja en creatividad, y la formación no parece haber dado en el clavo con “New Old Songs”, infumable compendio de remixes de sus temas mas conocidos, que no ha funcionado bien en listas ni generado precisamente elogios de la critica. Puede entonces que su éxito este en vías de extinción, pero además de unas saneadas cuentas bancarias, Limp Bizkit tienen poderío suficiente como para levantar cabeza y seguir siendo por bastante tiempo mas, si la cosa no vuelve a dar un vuelco, la portentosa banda que han demostrado ser, prejuicios aparte.
