I received a '20 years of service award' last July and was given a refresher holiday.
The company I work for offers me "up to seven days' refreshment leave" after 20 years of service and asks me to go on a trip. The company will "subsidise up to 200,000 yen" for the travel expenses and the costs incurred during the trip, within the limits stipulated in the regulations.
It is important to note that "you do not simply get 200,000 yen".
The mission is to "go on a trip using your refreshment leave" and to adjust your work to go on the trip. The main idea is to "get away from the daily routine."
Moreover, I have to travel within a year.
I was entitled to this refreshment leave in July 2023, but the following month, August, I contracted COVID-19 and was ill for more than four months afterwards, so I could not travel at all.
Eventually, at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, I was unable to make any travel plans at all due to a series of busy days and the worsening of my own chronic illness.
I finally managed to go on a refresher holiday in June 2024, just before the deadline, so I would like to leave this article with photos.
I travelled between 3 and 7 June to Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.
I can arrive from Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, where I live, by Shinkansen without having to change trains once en route.
The Shinkansen is a truly amazing vehicle because if I leave Nagoya Station at around 11:00 am, I will arrive at Kokura Station in Kitakyushu City at around 14:00 pm.
I have spent very little time in Kyushu, only visiting some areas on a school trip when I was a junior high school student and on a day trip invited by a friend for a drive and a meal.
I didn't make detailed plans for that myself, and my memories are also vague.
This time, I wanted to come to a place called 'Hiraodai Karst Plateau' in Kitakyushu City for mountain climbing (trekking). (I will give you some more details about Hiraodai in the next few articles)
As soon as we arrived, we checked into the hotel we had booked, which was less than a 10-minute walk away.
The hotel is located a short walk from the station, close to the downtown area, and there are several convenience stores around, which is very convenient.
I hadn't had lunch because the bullet train was crowded and I didn't have the luxury of feeling like eating because I had a lot of luggage myself, and I was very hungry, so I immediately went to a nearby convenience store.
And when I was looking at the onigiri (rice ball) section, I found a 'green takana' rice ball!
That's right, Ao Takana is Seven-Eleven's 'Kyushu only' onigiri.
I had no choice but to buy it.
Then I looked at the delicatessen corner and found another Seven-Eleven Kyushu-only item, Vinegared Pork Motsus!
This is a vinegared pork motsu and spring onion snack.
It was the first time I had both of these, and they were very tasty. I wish they would be sold in the Tokai region.
Along with the Hiraodai trekking, a must-visit this time was the Tanga markets.
This market is so well-known that it is called "the kitchen of Kitakyushu City", but due to two fires in 2022, some of the shops had to move to a nearby "Aozora Market" and reopen for business, as it is difficult to recover in the same place.
Perhaps because the day I visited was a Monday, most of the shops, both the old ones and those in the open-air market, were closed or closed early, so I could hardly enjoy my visit, but I could sense that they are gradually recovering.
The reason for my attachment to this market, which I have never been to before, is that this store, Kashiwaya Kurose (Chicken Delicatessen Kurose), is located in this market.
This store has been selling a spicy seasoning mix that has been very popular in the outdoor industry for about 10 years now.
There are many outdoor spices on the market in Japan today, and various manufacturers offer spices that are perfect for camping and outdoor cooking, including barbecue.
The mixed spices from this store are in the Hall of Fame among them. I love it too.
I hope they will continue to make that spice as always.
There were a number of such "Tange Market Support Vending Machines" around the market.
When you purchase a beverage from one of these vending machines, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support the recovery from the fire.
Incidentally, this "Tanga Reborn Project" poster is displayed at the station nearest to Tanga Market (monorail station), showing the history of Tanga Market to date and an image of the building when it is rebuilt.
I think the old streetscape is good, but I hope the market will be reborn as a new, more convenient market and do its best again.
One of the most surprising & lucky events this time was finding a "Maruwamae Ramen" store.
Fukuoka Prefecture is very famous for its "yatai" (food stalls) in Fukuoka City, and Kitakyushu City used to have many yatai as well, but now there is only one left.
I had heard about this story on a YouTuber who lives in Fukuoka Prefecture, and I had been thinking that I would like to visit that one and only yatai if I could, but since I am not that actively interested in eating ramen (lol), I did not do any preliminary research.
I was really surprised to find a "Maruwamae Ramen" store when I walked through the Aozora Dangae Market and onto a big street.
The system is that there is a permanent store on the first floor of the Maruwa Building, and ramen is also served in front of it in the form of a food stall.
In addition to ramen, the store on the first floor serves oden, gyoza, and beer. The delicious oden here has been talked about on the above YouTuber's show, and I am a big fan of oden!
I checked with the lady at the store who was preparing to open, and she said they would be opening in about 30 minutes, so I decided to take a walk for a while and then come back.
There is a river nearby called Murasaki River, and there is a very relaxing riverside walking space along the river, so I walked for a while enjoying the scenery.
After 40 minutes of thoroughly enjoying the sunny evening riverside walking, I came back to the ramen shop and took a picture of the Maruwa Building from a short distance away.
Tange Market is diagonally behind this building.
The second floor of the Maruwa Building is a 100 yen store, and I could see customers climbing up the stairs next to the ramen shop.
It was a really extremely clear day, and the sunset was so bright that I couldn't look toward the west (LOL). The temperature was a little higher, but it was a fairly windy day and cool.
If it is this cool, even if you sweat after eating ramen, it will dry up in no time on the way home.
And oden, which is essentially a typical winter food, should be delicious.
So I had delicious oden.
I ordered four items: daikon radish, shirataki, thick deep-fried tofu, and tsukune dumplings, as well as a nice cold draft beer.
The well-cooked oden was really delicious and I truly felt "glad I came!
There was a male customer before me who had oden, rice balls, and ramen. That is a huge amount of food.
I wish I could have eaten a lot more, but I was so full from just the fact that I was able to come to this restaurant that I was only able to eat oden and draft beer.
I returned to the hotel and had a good night's sleep.

Today was an environmental forum held by the company I work for. My first job after returning from my refresher vacation was to work as a receptionist for this forum. My younger juniors and I worked together to do a good job and it was very fulfilling.

私は昨年の7月に「勤続20年表彰」をされて、リフレッシュ休暇をもらいました。
私の勤めている会社は、勤続20年で「最大7日間のリフレッシュ休暇」を取得でき、旅行に行くように言われます。その旅費および旅行中にかかった費用について規定で定める範囲で「最大20万円まで会社補助」となります。
ここで注意が必要なのは「ただ単純に20万円をもらえるのではない」ということです。
「リフレッシュ休暇を活用して旅行に行ってくること」がミッションで、旅行に行くために自分の業務の調整をすることもミッションです。「日常から離れなさい」ということが主旨です。
しかも1年以内に旅行に行かなければならないのです。
私は2023年7月にこのリフレッシュ休暇の権利を取得したのですが、翌月の8月にCOVID-19に罹患してしまい、その後4ヶ月以上体調不良が続き、全然旅行に行くことができませんでした。
そのうち年末になり年始になり、忙しい日が続いたり自分の持病が悪化したりして全然旅行の計画を立てることができない状態が続いてしまいました。
期限ギリギリの2024年6月にやっとリフレッシュ休暇に行くことができましたので、写真と共に記事に残したいと思います。
私が6/3から6/7の間に旅行に行ったのは、日本の九州の福岡県北九州市です。
私の住んでいる愛知県名古屋市から新幹線を使って、途中で1度も乗り換えすることなく到着できます。
11:00頃に名古屋駅を出発すれば、14:00頃には北九州市小倉駅に到着するのですから新幹線は本当にすごい乗り物です。
私は九州にはほとんど滞在したことがなく、一部のエリアに修学旅行で中学生の時に行ったのと、友人に誘われて日帰りでドライブと食事をしたのみです。
それも、自分で詳細な計画を立てていないし、記憶も曖昧です。
今回は、北九州市にある「平尾台カルスト台地」というところに山登り（トレッキング）に来たくて、この場所に来ました。（平尾台については次回以降の記事で少しずつ詳細をお伝えします）
到着してすぐ、徒歩10分以内のところにある予約していたホテルにチェックインしました。
駅から歩いてすぐの場所にあり、繁華街も近い場所にあるホテルで、周囲にはコンビニエンスストアも複数ありすごく便利です。
新幹線の中が混み合っていたことと、私自身が荷物が多くて食事をするような気持ちの余裕がなかったので、お昼ご飯を食べておらず、すごくお腹が空いていたので、すぐに近くのコンビニエンスストアに行きました。
そしておにぎりのコーナーを見ていたら「青高菜」のおにぎりを発見！
そうなんです、青高菜は、セブンイレブンの「九州限定」おにぎりなんです。
これは買うしかありません。
それで思い出したお惣菜コーナーを見ると、これまたセブンイレブン・九州限定「酢もつ」も発見！
これは豚のモツとネギの酢の物で、お酒のおつまみです。
どちらも初めて食べましたが、すごく美味しかったです。東海地方でも売って欲しい。
平尾台トレッキングと共に、今回必ず訪問したかったのが旦過市場（Tanga markets）です。
こちらは「北九州の台所」と呼ばれるくらい親しまれている市場ですが、2022年に2回の火災があり、一部の数件の店舗は同じ場所では復興することが困難なため、近くに用意された「青空市場」にお店を移動して営業を再開しておられました。
私が訪問した日は月曜日だったためか、昔からある店舗の方も青空市場の店舗の方も、ほとんどのお店が定休日だったり早い時間から閉店していて、ほとんど楽しめませんでしたが、少しずつ復興されている様子を感じることができました。
今まで一度も来たことのないこの市場に私が思い入れがある理由は、このお店「かしわ屋くろせ（Chicken delicatessen Kurose）」さんのお店がこの市場にあるからです。
こちらのお店が企画販売されているスパイシーな調味料があり、このミックススパイスがもう10年くらい前からアウトドア業界で大人気なのです。
現在日本ではすごくたくさんのアウトドアスパイスが発売されていて、バーベキューをはじめとする「キャンプやアウトドアで作る料理にぴったりのスパイス」が様々なメーカーから発売されています。
こちらのお店のミックススパイスはその中でも殿堂入りしている製品です。私も大好きです。
これからも変わらずそのスパイスを作り続けてほしいと思います。
市場周辺にはこのような「旦過市場応援自動販売機」がいくつもありました。
この自動販売機で飲料を購入すると、売上の一部が火災からの復興支援のために寄付される仕組みです。
ちなみにこの「Tanga Reborn Project」ポスターは、旦過市場の最寄り駅（モノレール駅）に掲示されているもので、これまでの旦過市場の歩みと今後復興した時の建物のイメージ図が合わせて掲示されていました。
古い街並みも良いと思いますが、新しく便利な市場に生まれ変わってまた頑張ってほしいです。
今回最もびっくり&ラッキーな出来事のひとつが「丸和前ラーメン」のお店を見つけたことです。
福岡県は、福岡市の「屋台による繁華街」がとても有名で、北九州市にも昔はたくさん屋台あったらしいのですが、今はもうここ1軒しか残っていないんだそうです。
この話は福岡県にお住まいのYouTuberさんの番組で聞いていて、その1軒しかない屋台に行けたら行ってみたいなぁと私も少し思っていたのですが、私はそれほど積極的にラーメンを食べ歩きたいとは思っていないので(lol)特に下調べもしていませんでした。
それが、青空旦過市場を通り抜けて大きな通りに出たらなんと「丸和前ラーメン」のお店があったので、本当に驚きました。
丸和ビルの1階に常設の店舗があり、その前に屋台形式のラーメンも出るシステムです。
1階のお店ではラーメン以外にもおでんと餃子とビールを出していて、ここのおでんの美味しさは上記のYouTuberさんの番組でも話題になっていて、私はおでんが大好物！
開店準備をなさっていたお店の女性に確認したら、後30分くらいで開店するとのことなので、しばらく散歩をしてから戻ってくることにしました。
近くには紫川という川が流れていて、川沿いにとても寛げるリバーサイドウォーキングスペースが整備されているので、しばらく景色を楽しみながら歩きました。
よく晴れた夕方のリバーサイドウォーキングをたっぷり楽しんで40分後にラーメン屋さんに戻ってきて、少し離れた場所から丸和ビルの写真を撮りました。
このビルの斜め後側に旦過市場があります。
丸和ビルの2階は100円ショップになっていて、ラーメン屋さんの横にある階段からお客さんが登っていく様子が見えました。
この日は本当にものすごくよく晴れた日で、夕日がめちゃくちゃ眩しくて西の方を向けませんでした(lol)少し気温も高めでしたが、かなり風が強い日で涼しかったです。
これだけ涼しければラーメンを食べて汗をかいても、帰る途中であっという間に乾くでしょう。
そして、本来は冬の食べ物の代表であるおでんも、美味しくいただけるはずです。
ということで美味しいおでんをいただきました。
大根、白滝、厚揚げ、つくね団子の4品と、キンキンに冷えた生ビールを注文しました。
よく煮込んだおでんは、本当に美味しくて「来て良かった〜」と心から思いました。
私よりも先に1名男性のお客さんがいて、その方はおでんをたべて、おにぎりを食べてさらにラーメンを食べていらっしゃいました。すごい量です。
私ももっとたくさん食べられたらいいのですが、このお店に来ることができたというだけで胸がいっぱいで、おでんと生ビールだけで満腹になってしまいました。
この後ホテルに戻ってぐっすり眠りました。

■ひとこと日記
今日は私が勤めている会社が開催する環境フォーラムでした。
リフレッシュ休暇から戻って最初のお仕事は、このフォーラムの受付業務でした。
若い後輩たちと私は協力して、良い仕事ができ、とても充実しました。
