Peer influence on our finances

I got a call from a friend yesterday out of concern for another friend that had fallen on hard times. He called from empathy. He was so embittered. Life is cyclical for most of us. We have our ups and downs. Sometimes, we are liquid and at times we are flat broke like crushed bones. Except those that work in companies where their income is far more than their expenses, or those that have streams of income ftom multiple angles providing they do not live above their means.

Life will always give us seeds. We all have some. You can consume those seeds. You can plant and pray it grows or you can just keep them. What determines how most of us live are our peers. Our circle of friends. They most time determine what we do with the seed we have.

If you habit a space where it's all about "we are the one happening", there are demands on your income. It will determine the kind of ride you buy, the place you choose to live, your dress sense, the kind of bags and stuff your spouse will invest in. It’s all good when your income can support it. When it can’t, you realize that you do not have friends. You had associates.

It is no different for poor people. A circle of poor people are usually unhappy when one of them breaks out and makes it. They start looking for signs of pride in that person. And if you seek, you shall find.

The best peer to influence you is yourself. Be your own peer. Set your own boundaries and live at your pace. What you can’t afford, don’t stress to afford it. You know when you borrow to buy a new one in town car, you get hailed once. That is it. Na you go dey pay the gbese. "Gbese means debt. The car will tire you before the gbese ends.

Back to our friend. His life is based on the choices he keeps making. That does not seclude everyone. The choice we make with what we have at hand shapes our lives

A friend that was rich and became broke once told me when I was worrying about him, not to waste my worry. He said “did I ask you to worry when I was living large? I will get through this. That is how adults do. They face the consequences of choice.

If you think you have a dwindling finances, ask yourself this question. "Have I been making the right choices with money? I've been thinking here as well and I'm still on it. We gat learn and adjust.
