From A Simple Hello To Being A Close Pal

Among the things I have learned in life is that friendships can come in many shapes; some people we have known for a long time before we start to develop a relationship with them, while some, the moment you meet, you just kind of connect with them in a special way and your relationship can hit it right from there.

That is the story of Mummy Obim and me, a woman I met in the hospital during one of my antenatal appointments. We somehow caught each other's attention, and she said hello to me with such a warm and beautiful smile on her face. She has been such a great part of my life and that of my family in general ever since. I later found out we have so much in common; she is such a passionate mother, among other great qualities; no wonder we were drawn to each other the moment we got talking.

To be honest, that hospital was the last place I thought I would ever meet someone who would become a great friend of mine, as most women I have met since I started going to that hospital seem not to have a lot in common with me. There was this huge language barrier; once you can't speak their language, they won't even want to start a conversation with you; the most you are going to get is just greetings and nothing deeper.

They kind of disliked speaking the English language; they cherished their mother tongues so much that they believed everyone should know how to converse with them in their language. I was new In town, And since I only knew how to say Inakwana (good morning) and a few other words in their language, I was very limited.

But Mummy Obim thought born in this town. She is from a minority tribe, and this might have contributed to her easy way of making friends with any person other than her tribal person.

We only crossed paths twice at the hospital; the second time we exchanged phone numbers. About two months later, I had my baby delivery. She visited my home for the first time and came in bearing gifts for my baby. Ever since our relationship has been growing.

One of my favorite memories with her was during my son's first birthday. I told her I wanted to bake a cake for my son, and she gladly joined in the baking. That day she saved the day because I hadn't baked in such a long time, so doing the baking alone wouldn't have been a bit challenging.

She joined me and made the baking process so easy and fun. It was such a great experience, two amateur bakers in the kitchen, chit-chatting and helping one another, trying to remember the right measurement for all the cake ingredients.

At some point, I thought we were going to mess up the cake, but in the end, we nailed it. The cake decoration might not look like an "A-list baker's work," but it tastes very delicious, and everyone who tastes it wishes there was more of it.

She has a good habit of showing up at my house if we haven't seen her in a while. In her words, "I haven't seen you guys in a while; I can't just stay at my end any longer; I need to come to check on you," and some times I do visit her as well, where we exchange ideas and allow our kids to bond with each other by playing.

I love this so much about us; keeping in touch has made our friendship grow closer and stronger. One thing my friendship with her has reminded me of is to keep an open mind when meeting new people; we never know when we can cross paths with that person who will later become an important friend to us.

    Then End

Thank you so much for visiting and for your support 🥰 🙏
