Veronica lives in Spain, and her boyfriend is Spanish. I'm someone who enjoys conversing a lot and, above all, thinking deeply, so the time I spent with Veronica and her boyfriend was very interesting. I was curious about what he saw here compared to Spain and wanted to know his perspective on observing things in my country.
¡Hola, Hivers! Espero que todos estén bien. El novio de Verónica también estuvo en la sesión de fotos, pero no lo incluimos en las tomas familiares. Decidimos hacerle algunas fotos individuales juntos. Verónica vive en España y su novio es español. Soy una persona a la que le gusta mucho conversar y sobre todo pensar mucho, así que fue muy interesante el tiempo que pude pasar con Verónica y su novio, hablando con él, ya que me interesaba mucho lo que veía aquí en comparación con España. Además, quería saber cómo era su perspectiva al observar las cosas de mi país.
Our conversations were diverse, but I remember one in particular, where Veronica, Paola, he, and I were talking. Veronica mentioned that one of the strangest things about Spaniards is that death doesn't enter many contexts in their sense of humor. She told an anecdote where he said they took the dog to get a haircut and it died. Immediately, Paola, Veronica, and I (Venezuelans) burst into laughter because the situation, due to its absurdity, amused us greatly. However, he didn't even flinch and argued that it was a serious matter and not funny. It made us reflect that it's not that it's not funny, but rather that our perspective or exposure to certain topics is different because we're Venezuelans.
Las conversaciones que tuvimos fueron muy variadas, pero recuerdo una en particular, donde Verónica, Paola, él y yo estábamos hablando. Verónica mencionaba que una de las cosas más extrañas de los españoles es que en su sentido del humor, la muerte no entra en muchos contextos. Contó una anécdota en la que él le dijo que llevaron al perro a cortarse el pelo y se murió, a lo que Paola, Verónica y yo (venezolanos) nos reímos inmediatamente con muchas ganas, porque la situación, por lo absurda, nos causaba gracia. Sin embargo, él ni siquiera pestañeó y defendió que era algo serio y no daba risa. Nos hizo reflexionar que no es que no sea gracioso, sino que nuestra perspectiva o exposición a ciertos temas es diferente por ser venezolanos.
Broadly speaking, the underlying theme behind that laughter or lack thereof isn't about whether it's funny or not, but rather the things you're exposed to and how. Surely, for us, that situation is funny because we have a different exposure to the topic of death than a Spaniard does. Venezuela was one of the most dangerous countries for a few years, with murder rates higher than in countries at war at the time. So, the number of anecdotes we have with people who have died is higher, and for a Spaniard, whose quality of life is much more stable than in Venezuela, their exposure to death is much lower, and thus it's a serious matter.
A grosso modo, el trasfondo detrás de esa risa o no risa no se trata de si es gracioso o no, sino a las cosas a las que estás expuesto y cómo. Seguramente para nosotros, esa situación es graciosa porque tenemos una exposición al tema de la muerte que es diferente a la de un español. Venezuela fue uno de los países más peligrosos durante unos años, con índices de asesinatos más altos que en países en guerra de ese momento. Así que la cantidad de anécdotas que tenemos con personas que han muerto es mayor, y para un español, donde su calidad de vida es bastante más estable que en Venezuela, su exposición a la muerte es mucho más baja y por ello es un tema serio.
I suppose I'll revisit this topic later because it seems very interesting to me, but it's also quite difficult to delve into because it seems to have many layers of which I have no idea.
