Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Leagues of Votann, Cthonian Beserks
10th Edition Index
Cthonian Beserks are Votann that come from the Mining Guilds. As much as they are fearsome close combat fighters, the reason that they are so lethal is because they are Votann that have given themselves over to modifications in order to perform better in inhospitable environments.
A unit of 5 costs 100pts in game and is exactly what you can get out of the $62.50 box set.
You can also field a 10 man unit for 200pts which has double the amount of weapon options. It works in 5s.
All of the Beserks wield either Heavy Plasma Axes or Concussion Mauls.
One in every 5 can have Twin Concussion Gauntlets.
One in every 5 can be armed with a Mole Grenade launcher.
These two options are mutually exclusive.
Let's check their stats!
Stats
Movement 5"
Toughness 5
Save 6+/5+++(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 2
Ld 7+
OC 1
Weapons
Ranged:
Mole grenade launcher
24" Range, D6 Attacks, Hitting on 4+, S5, Ap-1, 1 Damage each
Blast
So when moving there is no incentive to stand still and use this weapon. If firing at someone you cannot see at all, then you hit on 5+, otherwise, shoot at what you CAN see and hit on a 4+.
With the new update you cannot hit your Indirect Target on better than a 4+ but if you had a Judgement Token on an enemy unit and could see them, then a 3+ is possible!
Melee:
Heavy plasma axe — sweep (choose one)
6 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S4, Ap-1, 1 Damage each
Heavy plasma axe — strike
3 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S6, Ap-2, 2 Damage each
Concussion maul
3 Attacks, Hitting on 4+, S9, Ap-2, 3 Damage each
Twin concussion gauntlet
4 Attacks, Hitting on 4+, S9, Ap-1, 2 Damage each
Twin-linked
So my thoughts here is that the Axes are the versatile option. Anti-horde and anti-heavy infantry. The Mauls are anti-vehicle/monster/terminator.
Always take the Twin Concussion Gauntlets. Very handy. lol
Abilities
Subterranean Explosives
If you hit something with you Mole Grenade Launcher, roll a 4+, if successful the enemy unit is -2" Movement, -2 to Advances and Charges.
This is great for controlling the board. They just need to hit with D6 Blast shots to attempt to active this ability. I would argue that in certain situations, this is worth more than the damage this weapon can put out.
Cyberstimms
This is a "fight-on-death" rule that activates on a roll of 4+ per model, they can then strike before being removed from play. Makes them potentially dangerous to deal with.
Thoughts
Cthonians are most Dangerous in Close Combat and most Tactical with their Mole Grenades. If I would play them, I would protect them by placing them inside a transport of some sort.
If I saw them trying to get to grips with me, I know that they want to get into mellee.
That makes 5 Leagues Votann Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 41.66% Completed! The total Completed on 8.85% Complete!
Thank you for reading!
