A little over a month ago, I returned from the office a little earlier than usual and had to visit a nearby village close to my place of residence. The purpose of my visit was to register eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme, which has been revitalized to provide safe and sound shelter to the homeless. While on my way, I met my friends in the village market, and after a brief chat of about 10 to 15 minutes, they decided to accompany me. They saw it as an opportunity to spend some time together while I carried out my official work, and I couldn’t refuse.

The village we visited was breathtaking, surrounded by evergreen pine trees blanketed in snow, making the scenery even more mesmerizing. Upon reaching, I immediately got to work, engaging with the destitute residents and understanding their hardships. Witnessing their struggles firsthand overwhelmed me with emotions, making me realize how fortunate we are to have our own homes, yet we often remain ungrateful, constantly complaining about the luxuries we lack. After registering a few beneficiaries on the portal, I reunited with my friends, who had been waiting in my car outside the residential area.

Since Nilnag Lake had been frozen for quite some time, we planned to visit its banks and watch boys playing on its icy surface. However, upon reaching, we found no one there. Instead, we decided to do something we often do when together—cook some meat ourselves. I fetched a pan from a nearby household, and to enjoy our meal without disturbance, we headed into the forest, where we could gather firewood.

Starting a fire was quite a challenge, as the recent snowfall had left all the firewood damp. However, we didn’t give up and managed to ignite it by persistently blowing air into it. Having spent years away from home during our studies, we all had developed decent cooking skills. While one of us took charge, everyone actively participated, offering suggestions. The moments spent around the fire were precious, filled with excitement and laughter—memories we will cherish for a lifetime.

As the evening grew late, at around 5:40 PM, we finally sat down to enjoy the snack we had prepared. The meal turned out to be delicious, and the experience of eating together in the middle of a snow-covered forest made it even more special. Trips like these always bring back old memories, and each time we gather, we cherish each other’s presence even more.

Before heading back, we stopped by a small Dhaba near Nilnag Lake for some tea. I always make it a point to have tea there, as the vendor prepares it with special added flavors, making it a favorite for many. The warmth of the tea made the chilly evening even more enjoyable, adding to the beauty of our trip.

As we finally left for home, the journey back was equally thrilling. We played our favorite music while navigating the winding curves of the hilly terrain, making the ride all the more enjoyable. Moments like these have become rare now, as we’ve all reached a stage where someone among us is getting married every year, and life has become increasingly busy. That’s why I value these trips so much—spending time with friends, cherishing these rare moments, and creating lifelong memories.
