Ever since I took this trail, it has been one of my favorites, if not the most. The postcard that characterizes this trail is the ruins of an old water elevator that exists there, called the Gordejuela Ruins. At the end of this post, I leave you a video that I published on my 3Speak channel, in which these ruins make an appearance.
Desde que realicé el recorrido de este sendero, se quedó como uno de mis favoritos, o sino el más. La postal que caratceriza a este sendero son las ruinas de un antiguo elevador de agua que existe allí, llamado las Ruinas de Gordejuela. Al final de este post te dejo un video que publiqué en mi canal de 3Speak, en el cual estas ruinas hacen aparición.
You might think, from the photo above, that the zig-zag stairs leading down to the ruins are part of the trail. In reality, the stairs and the ruins themselves are isolated from the public, and access to them is prohibited. The trail runs along a bridge that is in the site, and there you can take beautiful pictures from a viewpoint that exists in the place. This area is one of the most attractive of the Rambla de Castro trail.
Podrías pensar, segun la foto de arriba, que las escaleras en zig-zag que bajan hacia las ruinas son parte del sendero. En realidad, dichas escaleras y las ruinas mismas están aisladas del público, y prohibido su acceso. El sendero transcurre a lo largo de un puente que se encuentra en el lugar, y allí se pueden tomar preciosas fotografías desde un mirador que existe en el lugar. Dicha zona es una de las más vistosas del sendero de Rambla de Castro.
To get there, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, it is necessary to take two buses (Guaguas), one that takes you to the city of Puerto de La Cruz, and another local bus that takes you to the area of Los Realejos, a few kilometers from Puerto de La Cruz. From the nearest bus stop, you should walk about 5 minutes until you reach the beginning of the trail and see some information points. In the area, you can find a small yellow chapel and a restaurant. It is a relatively isolated area but with beautiful views towards the sea. At first, I was a bit confused about the actual trailhead. I started the trail through some paths that lead to Castro Beach.
Para llegar allí, desde Santa Cruz de Tenerife, la capital, es necesario tomar dos buses (Guaguas), una que te lleve hasta la cudad de Puerto de La Cruz, y otra guagua local que te lleva a la zona de Los Realejos, a pocos kilómetros de Puerto de La Cruz. Desde la parada más cercana, debes caminar alrededor de 5 minutos hasta llegar al inicio del sendero y ver algunos puntos de información del mismo. En la zona, puedes encontrar una pequeña Capilla amarilla y un restaurant. Es un área relativamente aislada, pero con hermosas vistas hacia el mar. Al principio, estaba un poco confundido con el inicio real del sendero. De hecho, inicié el recorrido a través de unos caminos que conducen a la Playa de Castro.
The Playa de Castro is a beautiful place that I visited in an unplanned way, due to my confusion with the actual trailhead. This initial area of the Rambla de Castro trail is very picturesque, as it is a series of paths that branch off and lead to the beach and an old small coastal observation fort. This area entertained me for quite a while before starting the trail. Once on the trail, it is impossible not to notice that the landscape has many palm trees.
La Playa de Castro es un precioso lugar que visité de forma no prevista, debido a mi confusión con el inicio como tal del sendero. Esta zona inicial del sendero Rambla de Castro es muy pintoresca, ya que se trata de una serie de caminos que se bifurcan y llevan hasta la Playa y hasta un antiguo pequeño fuerte de observación de la costa. Esta zona me entretuvo por un buen rato, antes de iniciar el sendero. Una vez iniciado el sendero, es imposible no notar que el paisaje posee muchas palmeras.
After a few minutes, the trail reaches a valley that opens up to the sea, making it inland to skirt the coastline. This area is a little different but no less beautiful, as you see some very picturesque plantations. At the same time, the trail starts to turn uphill. It is not that steep of a climb, but it can tire more than one, as it is a steady climb. The good news is that if you walk the trail in this direction, this is the steepest climb, and then the trail is friendlier.
Luego de unos pocos minutos, el sendero llega a un valle que se abre hacia el mar, haciendo que se interne hacia tierra dentro para sortear la línea costera. Esta zona es un poco diferente pero no menos hermosa, ya que ves algunas plantaciones muy pintorescas. Al mismo tiempo, el sendero empieza a tornarse cuesta arriba. No es una subida tan empinada, pero puede cansar a más de uno, ya que es una subida costante. Las buenas noticias son que si recorres el sendero en este sentido, esta es la subida más fuerte, y luego el camino es más amigable.
Shortly after, the path becomes a little more urban, with the presence of houses and some roads. It must be said that there is a part of the trail that could be better aesthetically speaking since the natural is a little aside from some urban sections that are not so well cared for. In this part, you reach a bridge and you may think that you have already reached the ruins, but in reality, these are located on the second bridge. There are some areas where the road is a bit narrow but very picturesque. I remember arriving at a place where the path passes next to one of the white houses with a very well-kept flower garden.
Poco después, el camino se torna un poco más urbano, con la presencia de casas y algunas carreteras. Hay que decir que hay una parte del sendero que podría ser mejor estéticamente hablando, ya que lo natural queda un poco a un lado por algunos tramos urbanos no tan cuidados. En esta parte, llegas a un puente y puedes llegar a pensar que ya llegaste a las ruinas, pero en realidad, estas se encuentran en el segundo puente. Hay algunas zonas en donde el camino es un poco estrecho pero muy pintoresco. Recuerdo llegar a un lugar en donde el sendero pasa junto a una de las casas blancas con un jardín de flores muy bien cuidado.
The trail is quite frequented by tourists from other parts of Europe, as it is one of the most renowned trails on the island. Already at the second bridge, you begin to see the ruins of Gordejuela, the most characteristic site of the postcards of the trail. It would be interesting to be able to enter these ruins, but you can see from afar that the road to reach them is dangerous and the ruins themselves could be dangerous as well. It is after passing through this area that the path becomes very interesting, as the trail runs under giant rocks of the mountain and next to the ravine that overlooks the sea.
El camino está bastante frecuentado por turistas de otras partes de Europa, ya que es uno de los senderos más renombrados de la isla. Ya en el segundo puente, empiezas a visualizar las ruinas de Gordejuela, el sitio ta característico de las postales del sendero. Sería interesante poder entrar a dichas ruinas, pero se nota de lejos que el camino para llegar a ellas es peligroso y las mismas ruinas podrían serlo también. Es luego de pasar por esta zona que el camino se pone muy interesante, ya que el sendero transcurre bajo rocas gigantes de la montaña y junto al barranco que da hacia el mar.
It is here where you can take beautiful shots of the horizon, where you can see the ruins, and the beaches of Castro and La Fajana. In this post, you can find some pictures from this same point of the trail, holding the #Hive-bag. This is the final section of the trail, and a few minutes after this point, we reach a small picturesque village, which technically seals the end of the trail, although it could continue further to an area that has a beach with 3 rocks.
Es aqui en donde se pueden realizar tomas muy hermosas del horizonte, en donde aparecen las ruinas, las playas de Castro y La Fajana. En este post, puedes encontrar algunas fotografías desde este mismo punto del sendero, sosteniendo la bolsa de #Hive. Este es el tramo final del sendero, y algunos minutos después de este punto, llegamos a una pequeña poblacion pintoresca, que técnicamente sella el final del sendero, aunque este podría continuar más allá hacia una zona que posee una playa con 3 roques.
This trail could be covered in about an hour and a half, maybe more or less depending on the speed at which you walk it. It is one of my favorite trails on the island. In general, the entire trail was well marked, except for a few spots like the one I mentioned at the beginning of the west side of the trail. In a future post, I will share with you what lies beyond this picturesque village (which I believe is called El Toscal), in which the trail passes through this rocky beach and beyond, reaching the outskirts of Puerto de La Cruz.
Este sendero podría recorrerse en hora y media aproximadamente, quizás más o menos dependiendo dela velocidad con la que lo camines. Es uno de mis senderos favoritos de la isla. En general, durante todo el recorrido estuvo bien señalizado, a excepción de algunos puntos como el que mencioné al inicio del lado oeste del sendero. En un próximo post les compartiré sobre lo que hay más allá de este pintoresco pueblo (que se creo que se llama El Toscal), en el cual el camino pasa por esta playa de roques y más allá, llegando a las adyacencias de Puerto de La Cruz.
