About few weeks ago I decided to try this for the first time to grow some yams in sack and compare their growth with the ones we plant in the fields in our farms. I have a very small space in the compound where I live here and not much gardening activities can be done nevertheless I want to maximize the available space to grow which every plant I can and to learn more about farming.
Why do people grow yams in sack
Alot of people have recently started to grow yams in sacks and after joining the team I have seen some of the benefits of doing this.
We maximize the available space to grow our crops. If we compare the ridges we make in the farms to plant yams, one will see that it consumes alot of space. And a portion that is used to farms some fifty tubers of the yam in the field can be diverted and used to plant multiple tubers of the yams are to be in sack. The sacks are usually of an average size that contains a single tuber per time.
Addition of compost manure to sack yams is quite easy. Instead of adding organic fertilizer co post manures generated from my kitchen can be poured in the yam sack, these things will rot and become manure for the growing yams.
It is barely two weeks that I have planted these and having sprouted the growing stem is almost about 10" now.
Seeing these success I got some more seeds to plant more of the yams
I have seen potatoes and other crops been grown in longer sacks and Im still looking at the possibilities of trying that.
Although the planting season for yams have passed. Yams are usually planted in the month of November all through to January and latest February. But since I got the seedlings late and want to try this out at home with some quality monitoring, I wouldn't be minding if this grows in it's season since it will be with me in the house and I can postponed the harvest that ought to occur in the month of August/September down to December if that is the time it will take for the yams to be properly matured.
And the good news for today is that the rains have been restored and full farming activities are about to commence. What a happy time for myself and every farmer out there.
