My Actifit Report Card: April 3 2024

Starting to work on my Tiny House yesterday, I paused to think about the exterior aspect. Currently, it looks like a little fishing shed. It's not great. However, the advantage of the green color is that from the road (which is 200m away), it makes the dwelling almost invisible.

But I don't want to keep it like that. Besides, I'm passively thinking about insulation. I don't want to insulate from the inside because it would take up too much space. Given that everything is very small, it's not worth it. So, the solution is to insulate from the outside. For this, I've watched a few videos on YouTube. It would be necessary to create a timber frame all around and, within this frame, insert insulation.

For the roof, the same thing would be necessary. I also don't want to insulate from the inside because, with the floor I'm currently creating, I lose a lot in ceiling height. If I insulate from the inside, there would be 1m80 left in height to live in, which would make me feel suffocated.

So, similarly, it would be necessary to insulate from the outside. But insulating a roof is more difficult. It's also necessary to create a timber frame. Within this frame, add insulation and, on top of the frame, lay sloped metal sheeting so that water flows into gutters.

Thinking about all this, I was surprised by an idea: on the roof, I would like to create a sort of small terrace. It would be great for several things:

    • Having a better view of my pond
    • Cleaning my roof more easily

And here's my cherry tree that I discovered yesterday. I'm so happy to have a cherry tree. If it doesn't freeze, I should have cherries this summer.

In my report from yesterday (which recounted my adventures from the day before), I left off when I still had half of my joists left to hang. So yesterday, the goal was to finish hanging all the joists.

Honestly, for all this work, I thought it would take me 4 to 5 hours at most. But I've already been at it for 4 days!

I had some difficulty in certain areas, especially with installing joists on this step.

Then, a new difficulty arose. Normally, our joists that go around the room must be fixed to the concrete behind with strike anchors.

But as you can see in the two pictures above, over 50cm, there is no longer concrete, but directly the wooden wall. This meant that we could not fix our joist.

So, we had to find a small piece of wood that was exactly the length and width of the gap to position between the joist and the wooden wall.

Afterward, we took the car to go to a hardware store to get some wood screws.

And there you have it, I think it should hold up well now, we put in 3 large screws!

The day really flew by. It's tough because we need to work in the morning on our freelance projects. Then, in the afternoon, we make progress on our tiny house. The round trip to the hardware store cost us precious time, but projects never go exactly as planned.

At least, yesterday we could leave our site with the pride of having finally finished securing all our joists. The next steps will be as follows:

    • Use the offcuts from our joists to reinforce our floor
    • Add shims everywhere to add stability and resistance.

It's not going to be a fun job because it will be very meticulous. But it will ensure we have a durable floor.

I'm leaving you a photo of our pond on which you can see water lilies starting to appear.

It's crazy how fast they grow. Two weeks ago, there was nothing yet.
