Yesterday marked World Engineering Day 2024. It is a day proclaimed by UNESCO in the year 2019, an opportunity to celebrate engineering and the contribution of engineers to make this world better and sustainable. To mark the day, I was invited to Bosomtwe Girls STEM Senior High School, the first-ever STEM school in the country.
It was inaugurated by the current Minister of Education. The occasion was graced by the Director of Education, The former provost of the College of Engineering of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), representatives of the minister, heads of other schools in Kumasi, and other guests. The program was dubbed, "Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World".
Even though the program was focused more on females in the engineering world, other male and mixed schools were invited. A total of about 1000 people were present at the occasion.
Speeches were given; these focused on introducing females to the world of engineering, encouraging and empowering them to take up the profession which has been long known to be dominated by males.
After the speeches and talks, it was time for some hands-on experience from our team. Our team was led by the President of Ghana STEM Network and IoT Africa, Joshua Opoku Agyeman. We introduced the students to the use of Arduino software and the STEMAIDE kit. We made a traffic indicator sample using these materials together with the code. This exercise was very successful, and the students were very much interested in it.
After this, we interacted with other people and took some pictures, then it was time to go. It was a very insightful, educative, and fun experience.
