Digital Life to Digital Wellbeing

A responsible use of device is the requirement of the time. At times we spend a huge time on smartphone or laptop or tablet devices and that to goes unproductive. With me the problem is always between spending time carelessly on device or using it for its intended use.

I often take the phone to search something and 30 minutes passes, after watching the time I came to know how quickly the time slipped from my hands. Playstote is filled with apps that locks your phone for a specified time and only allows for emergency use. However, it is still not easy to leave your phone and focus on work.

I get 200+ notifications a day and out of which only 30-40 notifications are meant to me and rest others ate just advertisement. Because of this notifications, I have to look on phone again and again. Blocking notification is a way but still many apps starts to behave weirdly when location or notification is turned off.

On an average I spend 6 hours on my phone and out of which 70% is reel scrolling or YouTube surfing. I do keep a check on my usage but sometimes boring works tricks me to scroll memes or reels.

Dopamine - a neurotransmitter which makes us to seek certain things in return of good feels. It is this circuit of mind that regulates your addictive behaviour. And in most case, people with low dopamine tends to seek certain things that gives good feeling. Over eating, over scrolling are few of the behaviours.

When we get tired of working or feel less interested in any work, we are very prone to switch to the easiest task that can give good feel. In modern time, the easiest accessible things are devices which are internet enabled. Enormous content is there of various topics, ideas which can hook anyone for hours.

    How to overcome this behaviour?

In my attempt to control this behaviour I went through many research papers, youtube videos, followed podcasts of Andrew Huberman and found simple ways to get rid of this behaviour.

First one is to detox yourself for a day. Just don't do anything interesting for an entire day. No music, no scrolling, no favourite food, no roaming around. Just sit for few hours doing nothing, not even work or study. Sit idle.

Second thing is to replace habits or atleast seek content that addons to your work. Seeing beneficial things are better than watching non sense content.

Third avoid bombarding your brain with lots of content. In modern times, we must be aware of what eliminate if we are not aware of what to seek.

Fourth, enjoy a boring life. Making boringness the new normal for you. Believe me knowing which planet is swinging faster or which animal goes slower will not going to add anything to your knowledge. It will only consume you and discharge you of your enery.

Remeber, its content which is consuming you. You are being consumed and left energy less for your important work.
