Darkness reigned in the old cabin in the forest when I woke with a start, covered in a cold sweat.

I had had another one of those terrible nightmares, where I relived the darkest moments of my past.

-He said ‘I love you’, looking into my eyes, and I believed him - Iwhispered to myself, shuddering at the memory of his deceptive but captivating gaze.

At the time, I was blinded by his lies, convinced that he really loved me. ‘He said ‘I love you,’ taking my hand, making me believe he was holding me so I wouldn't fall.’ But they were just empty words, a façade to hide his true intentions.

‘She said ‘I love you’ when I felt totally broken, and she made me feel like she was healing my wounds. How naïve I was to trust her. Instead of healing my old scars, her deception only created much deeper and more painful wounds.

A shiver ran down my spine as I remembered how her eyes blatantly lied as she uttered those two words I so longed to hear: ‘I love you’. A death trap disguised as affection.

-His hand let go of me when I needed it most, -I muttered bitterly. He abandoned me at my most vulnerable moment, leaving me in an abyss of despair.

But worst of all was remembering my own naivety. ‘I said, ‘Me too. The only difference was that I didn't lie.’ I gave my heart and soul to someone who only sought to destroy me from within.

A rustling outside startled me, making me fear that she had returned to finish what she had started. With trembling hands, I turned on the lamp, revealing the dancing shadows of the trees through the window.

She was safe, at least for now. But the scars of his betrayal and deceit would never fully heal. For some wounds, like those caused by lying love, are the most terrifying of all.
