I've recently been using Netflix and I didn't really know what to watch first, until my brother told me that he had seen very good reviews of a short series with a name that sounded strange to me, «Baby Reindeer ». As I was curious, I decided to watch it and it was definitely nothing I could have imagined, so today I will tell you my opinion about this series that has caused a sensation and with good reason.
Although I must admit that the topic is not suitable for all audiences and I will also give some spoilers
Synopsis
What's the worst that can happen if you give a drink to a person who seems to be having a bad time? Maybe that's what Donny thought, a bartender who dreams of becoming in a successful comedian who one day sees a woman enter the bar crying inconsolably and just wants a drink, but she forgot her wallet at home...
He politely gives her the drink and there begins his friendship with Martha, a successful lawyer (according to her) who for some reason can never afford anything. Donny takes pity and is kind, taking an interest in her life, listening to her, simply being a good friend to her, although Martha sees it differently.
Months pass and her attitude begins to change, having strange attacks of anger and beginning to write emails to Donny every day, several times a day. He starts to notice something strange but by the time he realizes what's really happening, it's too late...
There is so much to say about this series that it's hard to decide where to start. I suppose that in the first place what makes this story even more impressive is knowing that it is semi-autobiographical, because it tells part of the real story of its writer and protagonist, Richard Gadd. This makes the raw scenes even more difficult to watch since it is inevitable to think that the horrible things that happen to Donny's character also happened to the actor as well as millions of others. There is certainly some fiction, but that does not imply that the situations narrated are not a daily thing in an increasingly rotten society; It's quite the opposite.
This series of only 7 chapters manages to tell in a wonderful way a story full of horrible situations such as harassment, sexual abuse, rape, psychological trauma, drug abuse, as well as explores emotional responsibility, maturity and even sexual exploration. It also talks about how sometimes pursuing a dream at all costs can be a fatal mistake, and how it can become something impossible to fulfill.
I think the script is wonderfully well written since it perfectly explores each of these aspects even with such a short length of the series. The details are fair and necessary, allowing everything to be easy to understand and there are no loose ends.
I have to highlight that it is a story that can be difficult to watch because of how realistic and explicit it is. I, who am used to this type of narrative, had to make an effort to watch some scenes and others I simply couldn't. Although the explicitness is not intended to make the series morbid, nothing shown is there just for the sake of it. On the contrary, the explicit helps demonstrate how harsh reality can be and how these situations can happen to anyone.
Of course, it is not a story that everyone can watch, but it does show a reality with an important message for society because apart from being an entertaining series, it is also a story that invites us to reflect on the world in which we live in.
As if adding more to that social criticism, there is inclusion that for the first time in a long time does not feel forced, this is achieved since the story does not focus on said inclusion but rather normalizes it. It is presented, questioned and finally accepted as something natural, which makes it more realistic because frankly it is what happens in real life.
An interesting aspect is also presented, which is the double moralistic perspective of today's society, since they suggest how an obvious case of harassment is not taken seriously by anyone, neither by friends of the victim nor by police officials, due to the fact that that a woman harassing a man seems ridiculous. Everyone downplays it, everyone sees it as a silly game, everyone exaggerates it, even the victim. Therefore, giving visibility to these types of situations seems incredibly important to me to give them the seriousness they deserve.
On the other hand, all the performances are incredible, each of the cast members fully immerses themselves in the role, perfectly transmitting the essence of each character and the story itself, although of course the one who gets the most recognition is Richard Gadd, not only for being a very good actor but also for having the courage to tell part of his story. Besides, I think it's great how the episodes start off quite light, without anything risky, and then almost imperceptibly it escalates until everything horrible is released.
For these reasons and many more that can be discovered throughout the series, it is a story that I completely recommend of course, with discretion because it is quite raw.

Hace poco que utilizo Netflix y realmente no sabía qué ver primero, hasta que mi hermano me comentó que había visto muy buenas reseñas de una serie corta con un nombre que me sonó raro, «Bebé reno». Como me picó la curiosidad decidí verla y definitivamente no era nada de lo que me pude haber imaginado, por eso hoy les comentaré mi opinión sobre esta serie que ha causado furor y con mucha razón.
Aunque debo admitir que el tema no es apto para todo público y además daré algunos spoilers
Sinopsis
¿Qué es lo peor que puede pasar si le regalas una bebida a una persona que parece estar pasándolo mal? Quizás eso fue lo que pensó Donny, un bartender que sueña con convertirse en un comediante exitoso que un día ve entrar al bar a una mujer que llora desconsolada y solo quiere una bebida, pero olvidó su billetera en casa...
Él cortésmente le regala la bebida y por allí empieza su amistad con Martha, una abogada exitosa (según ella) que por algún motivo nunca puede pagar nada. Donny se apiada y se muestra amable, interándose por su vida, escuchándola, simplemente siendo un buen amigo, aunque Martha lo ve de otra manera.
Los meses pasan y la actitud de ella comienza a cambiar, teniendo extraños ataques de ira y comenzando a escribirle correos a Donny todos los días, varias veces al día. Él comienza a notar algo raro pero para el momento en que se da cuenta de lo que verdaderamente ocurre, ya es demasiado tarde...
Hay tanto que decir sobre esta serie que es difícil decidir por dónde empezar. Supongo que en primer lugar lo que hace incluso más impactante esta historia es saber que es semi autobiográfica, porque cuenta parte de la historia real de su escritor y protagonista, Richard Gadd. Esto hace que las escenas crudas sean incluso más difíciles de ver puesto que es inevitable pensar que las cosas horribles que le ocurren al personaje de Donny también le pasaron al actor así como a millones de personas más. Hay parte de ficción ciertamente, pero eso no implica que las situaciones narradas no sean pan de cada día en una sociedad cada vez más podrida; es todo lo contrario.
Esta serie de tan solo 7 capítulos logra contar de una manera estupenda una historia cargada de situaciones horribles como acoso, abuso sexual, violación, trauma psicológico, abuso de drogas, así como explora la responsabilidad emocional, madurez e incluso exploración sexual. Además habla sobre cómo a veces el perseguir un sueño a toda costa puede ser un error fatal, y cómo puede llegar a ser algo imposible de cumplir.
Considero que el guión está maravillosamente escrito puesto que explora perfectamente cada uno de estos aspectos incluso con tan pica extensión de la serie. Los detalles son justos y necesarios permitiendo que todo sea fácil de comprender así como no quedan cabos sueltos.
Tengo que destacar que es una historia que puede ser difícil de ver por lo realista y explícita que es. Yo que estoy acostumbrada a este tipo de narrativas tuve que esforzarme para ver algunas escenas y otras simplemente no pude. Aunque lo explícito no está con la intención de hacer la serie morbosa, nada de lo mostrado está allí solo porque sí. Por el contrario, lo explícito ayuda a demostrar lo cruda que puede ser la realidad y cómo estas situaciones pueden ocurrirle a cualquiera.
Por supuesto no es una historia que todo el mundo pueda ver, pero sí muestra una realidad con un mensaje importante para la sociedad porque aparte de ser una serie entretenida es también una historia que invita a reflexionar sobre el mundo en que vivimos.
Como añadiendo más a esa crítica social, existe inclusión que por primera vez en mucho tiempo no se siente forzada, esto se logra puesto que la historia no se centra en dicha inclusión sino que la normaliza. Se presenta, se cuestiona y finalmente se acepta como algo natural, cosa que lo hace más realista porque francamente es lo que sucede en la vida real.
También se presenta un aspecto interesante que es la perspectiva doble moralista de la sociedad actual, puesto que plantean cómo un evidente caso de acoso no es tomado en serio por nadie, ni por amigos de la víctima ni por funcionarios de policía, por el hecho de que una mujer que acosa a un hombre parece ridículo. Todos le restan importancia, todos lo ven como un juego, todos lo en exagerado, incluso la víctima. Por lo que darle visibilidad a este tipo de situaciones me parece de una importancia increíble para otrogarles la seriedad y gravedad que merecen.
Por otro lado, todas las actuaciones son increíbles, cada uno de los miembros del reparto se mee de lleno en el papel transmitiendo perfectamente la esencia de cada personaje y de la historia misma, aunque por supuesto quien se lleva el mayor reconocimiento es Richard Gadd no sólo por ser un muy buen actor sino también por tener la valentía de contar parte de su historia. Aparte me parece genial como los episodios comienzan bastante ligeros, sin nada subido de tono, y luego de manera casi imperceptible va escalando hasta liberar todo lo horrible.
Por estas razones y muchas más que se pueden descubrir a lo largo de la serie, es una historia que recomiendo completamente por supuesto, con discreción porque es bastante cruda.
