Does The Society Make Illiterates Feel Totally Useless?

My mum had a friend who comes to her shop to buy goods and pay later. This was about twenty years ago and I was still very little. That woman was one of the prominent customers my mum had back then until she had some problems and she could not meet up. She was still consistent with buying goods from us but the rate at which she bought goods reduced drastically.

Due to their family problems, she could not afford to send her kids to the University. So, her first child decided to start learning a handiwork and he chose to go for the electrician work. Unfortunately, he was delayed at work because we heard that he was too good and his boss wanted them to go to work together since he was very good. Fortunately, the boy is really serious with the work and you really need to see the kind of jobs he’s taking these days. He works for bigger companies that needs anything about electricity and he also attends to rich people in the country but he doesn’t have a University degree. This takes me back to the question I want to ask and my purpose of their post.

Just take a look at the way he set the light in my living room. Isn’t it amazing?

How do we measure success in life?

Remember I said in my story that the boy didn’t attend the university and he’s really doing well in life. Also, there are some people who go to the university, study the same electrify course but can’t do half of what this boy can do. I’m not sabotaging the fact that the University is good place to learn but why can’t university graduates do what this boy is doing? Is it because the workplaces where people learn from usually focus on the practical aspect and the university mostly focuses on the theoretical aspect?

Now, when you are seeking for a job, they ask you if you attended the university. If you don’t, it is likely for them not to give you the job and if they do, you will not be paid very well. This happens so much here in Nigeria and I think it should be like that in other countries.

Why favor a university graduate all for a certificate but doesn’t do the job very well like the illiterate does? Or he was employed because he could speak better English? I don’t get. I know the world cherishes education but we should not underestimate the fact that some people are very good at what they do and even better than those who attended the university.

What’s your opinion about this? Does the world have to continue going this way or how do we do it?
I cherish education but not everyone can afford it. We should not make those who cannot afford it feel totally useless. Are you with me? Am I right on this or do you think I’m being biased?
I’d love to hear your responses…
