The promise ring saga

in voilk •  4 months ago

Kayla and Sean had been dating for six years, and everyone knew they would be getting married sooner or later because their relationship was so strong that some got jealous of them.

Tina is Kayla's best friend; they have been friends since childhood. They both grew up together and attended the same school from childhood until their university days. Many who don't know them mistake them for twins.

Sean had given Kayla a ring two years ago, but getting married looked impossible as Sean wasn't making moves to settle down soon.

"You still have that so-called promise ring on your finger?" Tina said to Kayla one afternoon over the phone.

Kayla and Tina live separately as work separated them, although they were living together before Tina got a job in another state.

"Come on, baby girl, don't insult my ring," Kayla replied to her friend Tina with a smile over the phone.

"Na you tell me to say na promise to ring he calls am na, not an engagement ring o, (You were the one who told me it was a promise ring and not an engagement ring)", Tina further said, laughing hysterically.

"Ehn the ring was his promise to me, never to leave me," Kayla replied innocently.

"Ewoooo, someone comes to my aid, lover girl. The guy hooked you down with one fake ring for two years and is still counting, and you are saying na his promise abi? (It's his promise, right?)" Tina said.

"He promised never to leave me, and I trust him, so don't be bothered," Kayla said to Tina, who was still laughing on the phone.

"Okay girlie, I surrender; he will surely propose soon; biko (please) keep the ring safe so that it will always remind you of his promise," Tina said sarcastically.

"I have to go now; talk to you later," Tina said as she cut the call.

"Can he leave me?" Kayla asked herself and grinned. I'm sure he won't," Kayla replied herself.

A year passed and Sean hadn't proposed yet. Kayla became worried as Tina's words were now coming to pass.

"Would this guy leave me after all these years?" Kayla asked Tina one afternoon during their conversation on the phone.

"It seems so; nothing seems to be coming forth; expect anything, baby girl, and get your mind prepared for the worst," Tina replied to Kayla, who sounded worried over the phone.

"You shouldn't be saying that to me; you are supposed to comfort me," Kayla snapped.

"You know I'll never lie to you; just be prepared," Tina repeated.

"I need to talk to him about this; it's not making sense anymore; my parents are beginning to complain," Kayla said to Tina, tears almost rolling down her cheeks.

"I suggest you do; he might have his reasons, but all the same, it's getting longer than expected. You aren't getting any younger baby girl," Tina said, trying to comfort her friend.

"Talk to you later; wait, when are you coming?" Kayla asked her friend Tina.

"Someone misses me already; anyway, my leave at work starts on the on the 1st of next month, so you will see me soon, darling," Tina replied as she smiled and dropped the call.

"Silly girl, you better bring a reasonable gift," Kayla said to herself, staring at her phone screen.

Immediately after Tina dropped the call, Kayla called her boyfriend, Sean.

"We need to see it and make it today; I can't wait a day longer," Kayla said to Sean over the phone, then immediately dropped the line before Sean could reply.

Later that night, Sean showed up at Kayla's doorstep and expected a warm welcome as usual, but the reverse was the case.

As soon as Sean knocked at the door, Kayla stood up to open it, and immediately after she opened it, she hissed and went back to sit.

"Babe, what was that about?" Sean asked in surprise.

"Oh, you are surprised? You should be right," Kayla snapped angrily.

"See, I'm not doing this shot any longer; you hooked me down with your so-called promised ring for a good three years now, and you aren't proposing. What should I do with this ring of yours? Because you have turned me into a lord of the ring," Kayla said to Sean angrily.

"I told you to be patient; I'm planning something big for us; don't be distracted, please," Sean replied calmly.

"Really?, I shouldn't be distracted by going about with this promise ring of yours for years. Now I can see you have no plan to settle down with me; you are only deceiving me," Kayla said angrily.

"Kayla, you have to take things easy; I'm yours and you are mine; just give me a little time to get things ready for us to live a comfortable life, please," Sean persisted.

"Alright, I've heard you, but first, get out of my house; just get out!" Kayla shouted at Sean and showed him the way out. Amidst the pleading, Kayla pushed Sean out and banged the door angrily at his face.

Sean left, and since that day, Kayla has stopped picking up his call or giving him a listening ear whenever Sean came by Kayla's house to see her.

A month later, Sean's visa to travel to Canada was issued to him. This was something he had kept away from Kayla to surprise her. At this time, Kayla had already blocked Sean on all her social media handles, making it impossible to contact her.

Amidst all these issues between Kayla and Sean, Tina arrived to spend her leave from work with her friend.

Tina arrived at Kayla's house and knocked on the door. Kayla reluctantly came out of her room to check who it was as she peeped from the hole in her door, which could make her see whoever it was before opening the door.

"Oremi, (my friend), awnnnnn," Kayla said, hurriedly opening the door. "You want to surprise me, right? That's why you didn't call to tell me you'll be arriving today," Kayla said to Tina as she was helping Tina with her bag.

"Yes, and I got you right," Tina said as she hugged Kayla, picking her up from the ground.

"Put me down, jor. (Put me down, please.) How was the journey?" Kayla asked.

"It was fine, my dear," Tina said as she spun Kayla around and then dropped her.

"Haha, where is your ring? (Haha, where is your ring?) Tina asked, teasing Kayla.

"Don't start, please; let me get you a chilled drink," Kayla said as she headed to the kitchen. After a while, she returned with a glass of chilled orange juice.

"You get to tell me where the ring is. (You must tell me where the ring is), Tina said as she sipped out of the orange juice.

"I removed it and blocked Sean as well; I just don't want to see that liar and time waster anymore," Kayla replied angrily.

"Well, I'm glad your eyes are now opened. Live your life, girl, and let him go for good.

Tina and Sean aren't always on good terms, as Tina dislikes him for reasons best known to her.

"Anyways, now that I'm here, you are going to enjoy yourself to the fullest," Tina said, tickling her friend Kayla as they both laughed out loud.

A week after Sean received his visa, he left for Canada, and Kayla didn't bother to know his whereabouts since she no longer saw him at her house.

A week after Sean's departure, Tina was scrolling through her Facebook page and saw Sean's picture in a different environment. She immediately showed it to Kayla, who was unable to see it because she had blocked him.

"Wonderful, you are not seeing what I'm seeing at all," Tina exclaimed.

"You always shout wonderful when you see something interesting; let me see." Kayla snatched the phone from Tina and saw Sean's picture.

"This cheat didn't tell me he would be traveling out of the country; he practically dumped me," Kayla lamely said as she sank into the sofa.

Tina comforted her and encouraged her to move on, but Kayla couldn't get her mind off Sean as she unblocked him from all her social media handles. Surprisingly, Sean had dropped tons of messages for Kayla.

He told her all about his travels, which he wanted to surprise her with, and told her to stay strong for him as he would be back for her.

Kayla showed the messages to Tina, and she was surprised. It was then that she realized she had judged him wrongly.

After a few years, Sean returned and proposed to Kayla, and they finally got married as the promise ring turned into a wedding ring at last.
