If you love tough as nails, unforgiving, retro games then you are probably a fan of Ghosts n Goblins by Capcom. I am finding it hard to think of a more challenging title in arcades or on home platforms. Capcom really cranked the challenge level here UP. There are obviously fans because some are doing ports of it to new platforms such as this one for the Commodore Amiga. They are using Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) and the Scorpion Engine to make this happen.
Currently a Demo of a Work in Progress
As of this writing, only the first level is available in the demo that you can play right now. For those that have not played Ghosts n Goblins before this will easily be enough to find out if you are a fan or not. It only gets harder as the game progresses.
I do want to point out that the programmer behind the version I am talking about is named “Skyzoo73”. This will help differentiate this version from others that may be working on ports of their own.
Borrow a Bit Here and There
I do appreciate that the itch.io page shows that the graphics are ripped from the arcade game, apparently by “Locomule”. I want to point that out for anyone wondering if the graphics are remade by the developers or not.
I personally don’t mind ripped graphics, I am a huge fan of Mugen and OpenBOR, but I do appreciate when it is clearly stated.
While I would love to see new takes on this stuff, that was part of the fun of past ports, I understand it is often not possible for most. It does lose a bit of charm in that department though – I mean, if you only have a Commodore Amiga and are a HUGE Ghosts n Goblins fan then this is as close as you can get to the arcade. Otherwise, just emulate the original arcade version – Capcom has made it available on many platforms over the years.
