On March 20, 1995, the so-called Sarin gas attack occurred in a Tokyo subway station.
It was a large-scale terrorist attack in which 13 (some say 14) people were killed and over 5,800 injured.
March 20 of this year will mark 30 years since the incident occurred.
I think that the name of Aum Shinrikyo became well known just around the time I was a college student. It was originally a yoga dojo, but when they started talking about psychic powers and levitation, I could only think it was suspicious. And yet, as word spread, there was a flyer in my mailbox with a picture of Shoko Asahara levitating in the air. It was disgusting, so when I saw it, I immediately mixed it with the burnable trash and threw it away.
Then, after five years of college, I was running around looking for a job and took an exam to try to get a job at a company in Tokyo. I failed the exam, but the nearest station to that company was the one where the subway sarin gas attack killed people. If I had gotten a job at that company, I might have died in the incident. You never know what life has in store for you.
Until the sarin gas attack on the subway, Aum Shinrikyo was running for election, and the media, some entertainers, scholars, and celebrities seemed to be praising them for it. I was bitter about it.
I also felt that the police were not very good at investigating and dealing with Aum Shinrikyo. Despite the fact that there were many foreshadowing incidents, such as the murder of lawyer Sakamoto and his family and the Matsumoto sarin gas attack, they were unable to stop the sarin gas attack on the subway. Aum Shinrikyo is still active as a successor organization, changing its name to “Aleph” or some other name. When something unusual happens, a quick and precise response is required.
The Sarin gas attack on the subway was one of the few terrorist incidents in the world in which chemical weapons were used in the Tokyo metropolitan area. It is said that many people are still suffering from the aftereffects of the sarin gas. I sincerely hope that such an incident will never happen again.

1995年3月20日、東京都の地下鉄駅構内でいわゆる地下鉄サリン事件が起きた。
13人(14人とする説もある)が死亡、5800人以上が負傷したとされる大規模テロ事件である。
発生から今年3月20日で30年になる。
ちょうど私が大学生の頃から、オウム真理教の名が知られていったのではないかと思う。もともとはヨガ道場だったらしいが、もう超能力とか空中浮揚とか言い出した時点で怪しいとしか思えなかった。それなのに広まり出したのか、私の部屋の郵便受けにも麻原彰晃が空中浮揚しているという写真が載ったチラシが入っていた。気持ち悪かったので、見たら即座に燃えるゴミに混ぜて捨てたが。
そして大学を5年かけて卒業した私は就活に走り回っていて、東京のある会社に就職しようとして試験を受けた。試験は落ちたが、その会社の最寄り駅から地下鉄サリン事件で死者が出た。私もその会社に就職していたら事件で死んでいたかもしれない。人生何があるかわからない。
地下鉄サリン事件が起きるまではオウム真理教は選挙に出たりして、それをマスコミや一部の芸能人、学者、有名人などがもてはやしていたように見えた。私はそれを苦々しく思ったものだ。
そしてどうにも甘かったと思うのは警察の捜査能力、オウム真理教への対応だ。坂本弁護士一家殺害事件、松本サリン事件など、予兆となる事件が多々あったにもかかわらず、地下鉄サリン事件を止めることができなかった。オウム真理教は今も「アレフ」などと名を変えて、後継団体として活動している。何か異変が起きたら素早く正確な対応が求められる。
地下鉄サリン事件は、東京という大都市圏において化学兵器が使われた事件として、世界でもまれにみるテロ事件である。今でも多数の人がサリンの後遺症に苦しんでいると言われる。もう二度とこのようなことがあってはならないと心から思う。
