Elon Musk has confirmed that the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas was caused due to "very large fireworks and/or a bomb" located in the bed of the truck, rather than any malfunction of the vehicle itself.
The event happened early on January 1, 2025 resulting in the death of the driver who was inside the truck at the time and injuries to seven bystanders, all of whom sustained minor injuries.
Authorities are treating the incident to be possibly an act of terrorism. Investigations into potential connections to a recent attack in New Orleans that resulted in multiple fatalities are still underway, and the FBI is involved.
According to Elon Musk, all vehicle telemetry was normal at the time of explosion, showing that the vehicle itself was functioning properly. He underlined that the Cybertruck's design prevented more serious damage to the hotel by helping to confine the explosion.
Firework mortars and gas canisters were found by investigators inside the truck, which were linked to a detonation system thought to be controlled by the driver.
Concerns were raised by the explosion due to its proximity to a high-profile location related with Donald Trump. Elon Musk noted that this event was unprecedented for Tesla and assured that his senior team is actively investigating it.
As a precautionary measure, the hotel was evacuated after the blast but authorities have since indicated there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
