Conoce la uchuva, una exótica fruta de Suramérica / Meet the golden berry, an exotic fruit from South America

Saludos hivers y bienvenidos a mi blog. Si hay algo que caracteriza a los países tropicales es su variedad de especies animales y vegetales, entre estas, están las frutas. Son tantas que muchas de ellas nunca llegan a las grandes ciudades y sólo se consiguen en las zonas donde más se cultivan o crecen de manera silvestre.

Hello hivers. If there is something that characterizes tropical countries, it's their variety of animal and plant species, among these are fruits. There are so many that many of them never reach the big cities and they are only found in the areas where they are most cultivated or grow wild.

Una de esas frutas es la uchuva (Physalis peruviana). Este arbusto que puede llegar a medir hasta 2 mts de altura crece de manera silvestre en Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Chile y Argentina, su fruta es una baya de color amarillo - naranja del tamaño de una cereza.

One of those fruits is the golden berry (Physalis peruviana). This bush, which can measure up to 2 meters in height, grows wild in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Its fruit is a yellow-orange berry the size of a cherry.

Había escuchado el nombre de esta fruta pero no sabía nada de ella hasta que mi mamá llegó la semana pasada a casa con una bolsa llena de esta exótica fruta. Si bien su forma no tiene nada de particular, el envoltorio que protege esta pequeña baya si que es bastante llamativo y exótico.

I had heard the name of this fruit but didn't know anything about it until my mom came home last week with a bag full of this exotic fruit. Although its shape is nothing special, the packaging that keeps this little berry is quite striking and exotic.

¿Qué habrá aquí adentro? / What will be in here?

Apenas las ví pensé en hacer una sesión de fotos con estas frutas de modelo jajaja. Las frutas permanecen bien resguardadas dentro de una especie de saco en forma de vejiga de color verde que se va poniendo amarillo a medida que la fruta va madurando. Este saco proviene del cáliz de las flores de la uchuva.

As soon as I saw them I thought about doing a photo shoot with these model fruits hahaha. The fruits remain well protected within a kind of green, bladder-shaped sac that turns yellow as the fruit ripens. This sac comes from the calyx of the golden berry flowers.

¡Sorpresa! / Surprise!

Estos sacos en forma de vejiga tienen varias venas gruesas que los atraviesan verticalmente y muchas venas pequeñas que les dan el aspecto de hojas 🍂🍃. La fruta permanece pegada a la parte de arriba del saco hasta que está lista y se despega sola.

These bladder-shaped sacs have several thick veins that run vertically through them and many small veins that give them the appearance of leaves 🍂🍃. The fruit remains attached to the top of the bag until it's ready and peels off on its own.

La textura del saco es parecida al papel crepé pero un poquito más gruesa y rígida / The texture of the bag is similar to crepe paper but a little thicker and stiffer

Si bien la uchuva pertenece a la familia de las Solanaceae, y por lo tanto está emparentada a la papa, el tomate, el ají, los chiles, los pimientos y las berenjenas, su olor no tiene nada que ver con ninguno de ellos jajaja, es muy aromática y su olor se parece mucho a otra fruta tropical, la carambola o tamarindo chino (Averrhoa carambola).

Although the golden berry belongs to the Solanaceae family, and is therefore related to the potato, tomato, chili, pepper and eggplant, its smell has nothing to do with any of them hahaha, it's very aromatic and its smell is very similar to another tropical fruit, the star fruit or Chinese tamarind (Averrhoa carambola).

A medida que le iba tomando fotos desde diferentes ángulos me dí cuenta de lo fotogénica que es esta fruta, especialmente su delicado pero a la vez resistente envoltorio verde que esconde dentro de si esa pequeña baya de llamativo color amarillo. Estos saquitos en forma de vejiga me parecen unas obras de arte.

As I took photos from different angles I realized how photogenic this fruit is, especially its delicate but at the same time resistant green wrapper that hides that small striking yellow berry inside. These bladder-shaped bags seem like works of art to me.

Después de disfrutar del exterior de esta exótica fruta pues había que probar su interior jajaja así que le di un mordisco, tiene un sabor agridulce muy agradable y la concha es suave. Lo único que no me gusta es que tiene muchísimas semillas adentro 😬, demasiadas 🥴.

After enjoying the exterior of this exotic fruit, I had to try its interior hahaha so I took a bite, it has a very pleasant sweet and sour flavor and the shell is soft. The only thing I don't like is that it has a lot of seeds inside 😬, too many.

Para la mayoría de la gente esto no es ningún problema jajaja pero para mí sí, tengo una obsesión con cualquier fruta o vegetal que tenga semillas, no lo puedo comer al menos que se las saque 🤷🏻‍♀️, así hago con el tomate y otros más y si es fruta de muchas semillas prefiero hacerla jugo y colarla. Mi hermana dice que esa obsesión es un rasgo de psicópata jajaja, bueno, ni modo jajaja 🙄😬🤷🏻‍♀️, lo cierto es que no puedo comer algo y sentir que tiene semillas porque dejo de comerlo 🤫. Así que aunque me gustó el sabor de la uchuva, la exprimí en el colador y me tomé el zumo 🤭🤭🤷🏻‍♀️.

For most people this isn't a problem hahaha but for me it is, I have an obsession with any fruit or vegetable that has seeds, I can't eat it unless I take them out 🤷🏻‍♀️, that's what I do with tomatoes and others and if it's a fruit with many seeds I prefer to juice it and strain it. My sister says that this obsession is a trait of a psychopath hahaha, well, no way hahaha 🙄😬🤷🏻‍♀️, the truth is that I can't eat something and feel that it has seeds because I stop eating it 🤫. So although I liked the taste of the golden berry, I squeezed it into the strainer and drank the juice 🤭🤭🤷🏻‍♀️.

En Venezuela hay muchas frutas exóticas, sin embargo no todas se consiguen con facilidad en las grandes ciudades, sobretodo si vienen del Amazonas o de otras partes muy alejadas del centro del país. Afortunadamente en los últimos dos años se están viendo en algunos supermercados frutas nativas que muchos ni siquiera conocíamos que existían, así que es bueno conocerlas y probarlas.

In Venezuela there are many exotic fruits, however not all of them are easily available in the big cities, especially if they come from the Amazon or other parts very far from the center of the country. Fortunately, in the last two years, native fruits that many of us didn't even know existed are being seen in some supermarkets, so it's good to know about them and try them.
