Even after centuries, the famous words of the French architect, Violet le Duc, suggesting that the octagonal churches and hermitages possibly responded to a model of Templar architecture, continue to spark heated debates among historians, who, especially in recent decades, have brought out of its historical ostracism another mysterious medieval order, that of the Holy Sepulchre, to which they attribute, in reality, the merit of having built the main churches of this style, at least, here in Spain.
But the truth is that, when we go to Segovia and take the road to Zamarrala, always having as a guide the fabulous structure of the Alcázar, we observe, not without a certain stupor, that this imposing temple, with a plan, no longer octagonal but dodecagonal, takes the example of the church that the Templars had inside the castle of Pelerin, in the Holy Land and that is still shrouded in mystery, collecting, in passing, the most formidable of legends, while the people, faithful to their ancestral traditions, insist that it was they, the Templars, who, 'before being lost', as an inscription inside asserts and the place becoming part of the property of their rivals, the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, built this unique building.
Todavía, al cabo de los siglos, las célebres palabras del arquitecto francés, Violet le Duc, sugiriendo que las iglesias y ermitas de planta octogonal respondían, posiblemente, a un modelo de arquitectura templaria, continúan despertando encendidos debates entre los historiadores, quienes, sobre todo, en las últimas décadas, han sacado de su ostracismo histórico a otra misteriosa orden medieval, la del Santo Sepulcro, a la que atribuyen, en realidad, el mérito de haber levantado las principales iglesias de este estilo, al menos, aquí en España.
Pero lo cierto es, que, cuando nos desplazamos a Segovia y tomamos el camino hacia Zamarrala, teniendo siempre como guía la fabulosa estructura del Alcázar, observamos, no sin cierto estupor, que este imponente templo, de planta, no ya octogonal sino dodecagonal, toma el ejemplo de la iglesia que los templarios tuvieron en el interior del castillo de Pelerin, en Tierra Santa y que todavía está envuelta en el misterio, recogiendo, de paso, las más formidables de las leyendas, mientras el pueblo, fiel a sus ancestrales tradiciones, insiste en que fueron ellos, los templarios, quienes, ‘antes de perderse’, como asevera una inscripción en su interior y el lugar pasara a formar parte de los bienes de sus rivales, la Orden del Hospital de San Juan de Jerusalén, levantaron este singular edificio.
