Few or many. Few or many? "Few or many?" the butcher asked Gillian. She looked at him. What a strange way to ask how much chicken she wanted. Did he mean pounds? Did he mean whole chickens? She had simply asked for some boneless, skinless chicken breast. She didn't know exactly how many she wanted. And what did few or many mean, anyway? It might be one thing to her and something entirely different to the butcher. If he saw the confusion in her face, he didn't let on. He just stared at her, the question hanging in the air. There were other customers behind her. How long would they stare at one another while she tried to decipher the meaning of his question? While she contemplated her need for chicken breast? How long would he wait before responding to the grunts of the impatient horde behind her? It was Friday evening, after all. People on their way home from work, eager to get home and change into their comfortable clothes and cook their meat in their own kitchens. Few or many chicken breasts. Few or many pounds. Perhaps she only wanted one pound. Is one few? Is two few? Or must it be three at a minimum? Had she even considered exactly what she wanted? The other clerk, the one working the previous Friday, had simply given her a clump of raw chicken.
