Garden pests, Nematopodos

Pests are a problem for the horticulturist, but they are part of nature and we must learn to live with them. It is a mistake to try to eliminate them completely with products that in the long term will be much more harmful to us, causing serious illnesses. In this series of articles I will talk about how to deal with these small, undesirable living beings.

Nematopods are small worms that live in the soil and feed on the roots of our vegetables. As you can imagine, this is not good for our plants. Above all, they like moist soil and when we water them, we give them their best habitat.
They should not be confused with earthworms, which are the gardener's best ally and which we should never harm.

These microscopic worms can be a serious problem at times, but normally they do not cause great damage since the plants have their own defenses against them.
But we can always help and one of the best ways is to plant marigolds between the vegetables or around them. Marigolds are plants that secrete a substance in and around their roots that eliminates these worms. This will make us much less likely to suffer an attack.

It also helps to have good garden management. If we fertilize and water correctly, it will be very difficult for them to cause us problems. Do not use chemicals as they will also kill the rest of the microorganisms in the soil that help us so much with our harvest.
