Why We Choose the Art We Do

This topic reminds me of a time my twin brother was laughing at me. For some reason they claimed I was bringing shame to the family name by watching Nigerian movies. I was like ah, what should I like? Yes, most Nigerian movies are one way but then I’d choose them over a lot of action movies which in reality show things that don’t happen.

I sometimes think I am a hypocrite though cause I claim I don’t like American action movies because of what they display but then I tend to enjoy watching Indian movies. With Indian movies I think we can all agree that they show things which we all know their lies. What even draws me more closer to Indian films is the strength they tend to give the lead role.

The lead role could literally take on the whole world and wouldn’t even have a little injury or drop it blood from all the hits. So at least when I am watching an Indian movie I know why I am watching.

There are different reasons for how we all watch movies. Some people watch movies as their gate way to escaping reality and can literally spend the whole day glued to the screen. Others watch movies for life lessons as some movies are filled with life lessons. Perfect examples are movies made by churches. They are movies which are meant to strengthen the Christian faith so you’ll find out that most of the time those movies teach lessons about having faith in God.

These days I tend to get my movie recommendations from TikTok. I know how much some people try to deny the impact that TikTok had over our lives. The thing is it has but it is up to us to decide if it’s a positive or negation impact. For me, the only reason why TikTok can recommend a movie and I’ll watch is if they show a part which is intriguing. You can literally talk about a movie the whole day but if you don’t show what I want to see I will tend not to watch it.

I think sometimes we tend to align more with movies if a character in the movie has a character trait that we identify with. For sometime now I’ve realised that whether Nigerian or American I tend to be drawn to a certain kind of movie where the man has a certain character trait I recently discovered about myself. The thing is that thing might not be a normal thing in your society but as soon as you see it being endorsed these days you tend to want to watch such a movie.

For me, I do think that a movie has to be that good for people to watch it. It has to be worth the person leaving his or her stuff and giving it 2-3 hours of his or her time. If not why will I want to watch a movie which is not what I want to watch? I also believe that there are movies which has not life lessons and they don’t have to be but we just watch them for the fun of it.

What type of movies do you enjoy? Do they have to align with a certain character trait or you follow the crowd and watch what people say is the new norm?
