A little bit of history
In the first years of the founding of the Villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana, there were practically no doctors or places where medicines were sold. The few places that existed had only a few products that were often scarce or were sold even after they had expired, since they were not produced in Cuba and had to be brought from Spain. It was only a century later when some Cuban doctors who had graduated abroad began to settle and practice in the city that the number of pharmacies began to increase. However, it was not until after three centuries after the emergence of the Villa that the pharmaceutical stores became popular, and began to offer innovative products brought mainly from Europe and the United States, and with the advances in science, they began to elaborate and produce their own medicines.
From that moment on, the apothecaries became luxurious establishments, standing out for their counters and furniture made of precious woods, their beautiful stained glass windows and their porcelain knobs and earthenware for storing medicines. One of these apothecaries famous for the quality of its products and of great prestige was the Taquechel Pharmacy.
Taquechel Pharmacy
This place belongs to the Historic Center of Old Havana, is located on Obispo Street, and is currently a museum that exhibits different items related to the history of pharmaceuticals in Cuba. Upon entering, we are surrounded by a cozy atmosphere, where wooden furniture abounds. The place has a soft and dim lighting that gives us a very pleasant feeling of warmth.
From the ceiling hang two beautiful crystal lamps that make everything look very elegant. The tall wooden shelves, with glass doors, extend from the floor to the ceiling and cover almost the entire length of the walls. The counter and display case, also made of wood, showcases various products and medicines, many of which are made from natural raw materials and are much appreciated by the public. The next time I visit this place I will surely buy something, there were several things that caught my attention.
Also preserved and exhibited in this museum are several pieces of antique furniture made of valuable wood, as well as several collections of porcelain bottles from the 19th century and some glass containers and utensils that were used to make different drugs. The original cash register is still preserved.
I really enjoyed learning about the Taquechel Pharmacy, as I had never visited this site before. I was glad to see how it has been rescued and restored to preserve it as it looked in the 19th century, with the same splendor it had in its years of greatest popularity. This makes this establishment a very visited place by foreigners and Cubans alike.

Las farmacias o boticas, como eran conocidas en la Habana en siglos anteriores, no solo eran conocidas por ofrecer medicamentos y otros productos necesarios, sino que muchas de ellas también destacaban por su hermoso y elegante diseño interior. En este artículo, me voy a referir a uno de estos establecimientos, su nombre: La Farmacia Taquechel.
En los primeros años de fundada la Villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana, prácticamente no había médicos ni locales donde se vendieran medicinas. Los escasos lugares que existían solo tenían unos pocos productos los que a menudo escaseaban o se vendían incluso después de haber caducado, ya que no se producían en Cuba y tenían que ser traídos desde España. Fue solo un siglo más tarde cuando algunos médicos cubanos graduados en el extranjero comenzaron a establecerse y a ejercer en la ciudad que comenzó a aumentar el número de farmacias. Sin embargo, no fue después de pasados tres siglos desde el surgimiento de la Villa que los comercios farmacéuticos se volvieron populares, y empezaron a ofertar novedosos productos traídos principalmente desde Europa y Estados Unidos, y con los avances de la ciencia comenzaron a elaborar y producir sus propios medicamentos.
Desde aquel momento, las boticas se convirtieron en establecimientos lujosos, destacando por sus mostradores y muebles de maderas preciosas, sus hermosas vidrieras y sus pomos de porcelana y lozas para almacenar medicinas. Una de estas boticas famosa por la calidad de sus productos y de gran prestigio fue la Farmacia Taquechel.
Este lugar pertenece al Centro Histórico de La Habana Vieja, está ubicado en la calle Obispo, y actualmente es un museo que exhibe diferentes artículos relacionados con la historia farmacéutica en Cuba. Al entrar, nos envuelve un ambiente acogedor, donde lo que más abunda son los muebles de madera. El local tiene una iluminación suave y tenue que nos brinda una sensación de calidez muy agradable.
Del techo cuelgan dos hermosas lámparas de cristal que que hacen que todo tenga un aspecto muy elegante. Los altos estantes son de madera, con puertas de cristal, se extienden desde el piso hasta el techo y abarcan casi toda la extensión de las paredes. El mostrador y vitrina, también de madera, exhibe diversos productos y medicamentos, muchos de los cuales están elaboradas con materia prima natural y son muy apreciados por el público. La próxima vez que visite este lugar seguro comprare algo, hubo varias cosas que llamaron mi atención.
También se conservan y se exhiben en este museo varios muebles antiguos elaborados con valiosas maderas, así como varias colecciones de frascos de porcelana del siglo XIX y algunos envases y utensilios de cristal que eran utilizaron para elaborar diferentes fármacos. Aún se conserva la caja registradora original del local.
Me gustó mucho conocer la Farmacia Taquechel, ya que nunca antes había visitado este sitio. Me alegró ver cómo se ha rescatado y restaurado para conservarlo tal y como lucía en el siglo XIX, con el mismo esplendor que tenía en sus años de mayor popularidad. Esto hace que este establecimiento sea un lugar muy visitado tanto por extranjeros como por cubanos.
