Vintage American Argent Mint Shield Silver Round

Silver trade units not only represent silver but also evoke the spirit of global trade and exchange. These rounds were often produced by various mints and private companies made of 1 troy ounce silver round with a fineness of .999 (99.9% pure silver).

The design of the Silver Trade Unit can vary based on the mint or manufacturer. Some common features include:

    1. It often displays symbols related to trade, commerce, or global exchange. Examples include globes, scales, ships, or other trade-related imagery.
    2. May feature inscriptions such as “ONE SILVER WORLD TRADE,” “999 FINE,” and “ONE TROY OUNCE PURE SILVER.”
    3. The hexagonal shape is also a distinctive characteristic of some trade units.

Vintage Silver Trade Units from different years and mints are sought after by collectors. The silver rounds may have unique designs, historical significance, or limited production runs.
Some vintage trade units are no longer in circulation, making them increasingly difficult to obtain.

Today, I will feature another Silver Trade Unit!

Not much is known about American Argent Mint's past. They started about 1982 and, based to IRS filings, went out of business around 1984. Their headquarters were in Provo, Utah.1 American Argent Mint only made one type of 1 Oz bar and one type of 1 Oz round in their brief existence. A silver trade unit on the reverse was the only round that is known to have been made. On the front of that one silver round is a shield, while on the reverse of the silver bar is a stylized flying eagle (photo below from eBay).

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the scales, an image found on many trade unit silver rounds. Along the outer circle at the top "AMERICAN ARGENT MINT LTD." is inscribed. The purity and content of ".999 FINE SILVER " can be found on the outer circle below the scales. Right underneath the scales the weight of "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed.

Obverse: The central image is the U.S. Shields. Above the shield in a ribbon the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed. The phrase "WORLD TRADE SILVER" is inscribed above the shield along the outer rim. The content "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed below the shield, also along the outer rim.
