Trust me I've never smoked a cigarette in my life because of the way my mother raised me in a strict environment I knew what is right and wrong for my health.
There are people who do drugs and than there are people who drink alcohol excessively. There's some bad side of drinking alcohol that is one of reasons why I never go near it.
The Worse Side of Drinking Alcohol
Most of the time people drink when they want to enjoy, celebrate and sometimes when they're sad or depressed in moments like these people drink alcohol excessively.
The fact that once that drink works you end up losing your self control and have no idea what you're doing at that time.

Back in childhood days there was this friend of mine in neighbourhood who's dad used to drink alcohol and everytime he returned home completely drunk at night.
It always ends up being abusive to each other in that family and than the whole neighborhood used to make peace in that house and asked his wife many times to leave him since he refused to change his habit.
No Good to your own family
The alcoholic person used to be no good for his family in any way like from being abusive to not doing any job or work to provide his family.
And the entire neighborhood used to avoid interacting with him.
The other kids trolled his child because of his father and poor kid didn't have done anything wrong at all.

So, when a person is drinking too much alcohol that he ends up losing his mind and don't care about family and loved one's than there's no point of living at all.
It's like not just the family or kid but society will completely abandon him unless that alcoholic person changes himself to a better person.
So, it's not any better than drugs
In my opinion it isn't any better than drugs but more like same and in liquid form because you're not yourself once you're drunk and could harm others or do worse than that.
Also it's strictly told in our religion to stay away from alcohol no matter what because of the obvious reasons.
I won't say anything about those people who are drinking and still just being themselves not harming others and not letting that drink destroy yourself and future.
Wrapping Up...
In the end I've just seen things that made me choose the path without using any alcohol or drugs and even a cigarette.
I was literally offered to drink and take drug that too when I used to be 16 at place where I was working and I just never let my self go near to it which is something good.
