As the days of our last-minute road trip went by, I was already getting a little used to the cities and towns we were seeing in Bolivia. Since another member of the group joined us at our stop in Uyuni, we were three tourists traveling the roads of this country. None of us had a precisely planned itinerary, so any place we visited would be fine. After spending two nights in Potosí, our journey continued a little further until we reached the city of Sucre, one of the capitals of this place 😃.
A medida que fueron pasando los días de nuestro roadtrip de último minuto, ya me estaba acostumbrando un poco a las ciudades y pueblos que íbamos viendo en Bolivia. Desde que en nuestra parada en Uyuni se unió a nosotros una integrante más al grupo, fuimos tres turistas recorriendo las rutas de este país. Nadie de nosotros tenía un itinerario precisamente planeado, así que cualquier lugar que visitáramos estaría bien. Después de haber pasado dos noches en Potosí, nuestro camino continuó un poco más allá hasta llegar a ciudad de Sucre, una de las capitales del lugar 😃.
I say one of the capitals because Guest M and I debated which was the capital of Bolivia, Sucre or La Paz, and searching on the internet we discovered that both are. I was glad that the country had two capitals because at least I was going to be able to see the one that was closest to me on the road we were taking and it was Sucre. We had to travel about 155 kilometers to join Potosí with Sucre, not much so we arrived early to explore the place a bit. From the hostel we had booked we could already have these views of the orange city, something we saw a lot in Bolivia. There is a legend that says that if the buildings are finished the owners must pay more taxes, and that is why they leave them unfinished. Do you believe it 🙃?
Digo una de las capitales porque Huésped M y yo debatimos sobre cual era la capital de Bolivia, si Sucre o La Paz, y buscando en internet descubrimos que ambas lo son. Me alegré que el país tuviera dos capitales porque al menos iba a poder conocer la que me quedaba más cerca en el camino que estábamos haciendo y se trataba de Sucre. Tuvimos que hacer unos 155 kilómetros para unir Potosí con Sucre, no mucho así que llegamos temprano como para explorar un poco el lugar. Desde el hostel que habíamos reservado ya podíamos tener estas vistas de la ciudad anaranjada, algo que vimos mucho en Bolivia. Hay una leyenda que dice que si las construcciones están finalizadas los propietarios deben pagar más impuestos, y por eso las dejan sin terminar. ¿Ustedes lo creen 🙃?
We found a nice hostel that charged us 70 bolivianos per person to stay ($10 approximately), which was right within our budget. Being in one of the capitals, staying in the downtown area was already more expensive, but this place was only about 10 blocks away. When we got closer to the more touristy area, the landscape changed radically, as if we were suddenly in another place. The city center had several elegant buildings from the old days and reminded me quite a bit of Buenos Aires at times. All those orange houses we had seen a few blocks back were long gone 😃.
Encontramos un buen hostel que nos cobró 70 pesos bolivianos por persona para hospedarnos ($10 aproximadamente), lo que entraba justo en el presupuesto que teníamos. Al estar en una de las capitales, hospedarse en el centro-centro ya era más costoso, pero este lugar quedaba solamente a unas 10 cuadras de él. Cuando nos acercamos a la zona más turística, el paisaje cambió radicalmente, como si de repente estuvieramos en otro lugar. El centro de la ciudad contaba con varios edificios elegantes de la época antigua y me recordó bastante a Buenos Aires por momentos. Lejos quedaron todas esas casas anaranjadas que habíamos visto unas cuadras atrás 😃.
Something that caught our attention in the downtown area of Sucre, besides these beautiful and well-kept buildings, were the power lines. There were hundreds of cables hanging in all the streets, with very complex connections and surely added over the years. Surely this city has expanded over time, which forced the need to make installations on top of those that were already there. Woe to the electricians who have to do some work up there, because it looked like a real mess 🙃.
Algo que nos llamó la atención de la zona del centro de Sucre, además de estos edificios hermosos y bien cuidados, eran los tendidos eléctricos. En todas las calles habían cientos de cables colgados, con conexiones muy complejas y seguramente añadidas con el paso de los años. Seguramente esta ciudad se habrá expandido con el tiempo, lo que obligó a tener que hacer instalaciones sobre las que ya estaban. Pobre de los electricistas que tengan que hacer algún trabajo ahí arriba, porque se veía como un verdadero caos 🙃.
We took advantage of our afternoon to continue walking a little more without having to use the poor little car. In Sucre there were several plazas and parks to visit. We passed by what was supposed to be the shopping center, but there were a lot of people here and there, so we decided it was better to get away from all that and look for a more relaxing place. On our way we came across the Cathedral Basilica, the House of Liberty and the Council of the Magistracy, until we arrived at Simon Bolivar Park, where it seemed that there was more space to spread out 😃.
Aprovechamos nuestra tarde para seguir caminando un poco más sin tener que seguir usando el pobre autito. En Sucre habían varias plazas y parques para ir a visitar. Pasamos por lo que sería el centro comercial, pero había mucha gente de acá para allá, por lo que decidimos que era mejor alejarnos un poco de todo eso y buscar un lugar más relajado. En nuestro camino nos cruzamos con la Catedral Basílica, la Casa de la Libertad y el Consejo de la Magistratura, hasta que llegamos al Parque Simón Bolivar, donde se veía que había más espacio para esparcirse 😃.
We really liked this park and it was also very interesting because it had several concepts in one. It was a place with lots of greenery and picnic tables and chairs, which on one side had a large food court, on the other side had a dinosaur-themed park, in the middle had a fountain with pedal boats and further in the background there was a rose garden with sculptures in the trees and a quiet pond. It is as if they wanted to take advantage of the place to put everything and that is what they did 😅.
Este parque nos gustó bastante y también era muy curioso porque tenía varios conceptos en uno. Era un lugar con mucho verde y mesas y sillas para picnic, que en un lado tenía una gran feria de comidas, en otro lado tenía un parque con temática de dinosaurios, en el medio tenía una fuente con botes a pedal y más en el fondo había un rosedal con esculturas en los árboles y un estanque tranquilo. Es como si ellos quisieran haber aprovechado el lugar para poner de todo y así lo hicieron 😅.
And as if that weren't enough, in the center of this park there was a small branch of the Eiffel Tower, where you could climb up to have a good view of the park from above. I don't know if the idea of this tower was for children, but we, three adults, climbed up anyway because we were curious to see how everything looked from up there. From below it didn't seem that high, but it was, so we stayed there for a while. I don't know if I'll ever visit Paris, but at least I got a little closer 😂.
Y como si fuera poco, en el centro de este parque había una pequeña sucursal de la Torre Eiffel, en donde podías subirte a tener unas buenas vistas superiores del parque. No sé si la idea de esta torre era para los niños, pero nosotros, tres adultos, nos subimos igual porque teníamos curiosidad de ver cómo se veía todo desde ahí. Desde abajo no parecía tan alta, pero si lo era, así que nos quedamos un buen rato ahí. No sé si algún día visitaré Paris, pero al menos ya tuve una pequeña aproximación 😂.
I really liked the city of Sucre and it was the first, more elegant one we saw in Bolivia. In all our previous stops we had been seeing small villages in the mountains, but this already felt like a more developed city. Although I prefer villages like the first ones, I liked the idea of being in a city and seeing what there was to do there. I was also surprised by the buildings I saw there, because they were well maintained and beautified the city. This sixth stop on our road trip had already been great and it had only just begun 😃.
La ciudad de Sucre me gustó bastante y fue la primera más elegante que vimos en Bolivia. En todas nuestras paradas anteriores habíamos estado viendo pequeños pueblos en las montañas, pero esto ya se notaba como una ciudad más desarrollada. Si bien yo prefiero los pueblos como los primeros, me agradaba la idea de estar en una ciudad y ver qué había para hacer por ahí. También me sorprendieron los edificios que ahí vi, porque estaban bien cuidados y embellecían la ciudad. Esta sexta parada en nuestro roadtrip ya había sido genial y recién había empezado 😃.
