EXPANDING MY MUSICAL •//• Goals for the New Year.

As a big fan of music, it has always been a daily companion for me. Music is therapeutic, and a source of comfort. I believe that music means different things to different people, shaped by their personalities, preferences, and perspectives. Everyone should be able to enjoy music in their own way.

Last year, I took a shift in my relationship with music. I became more intentional about the songs I chose to listen to. I realised that music has a way of influencing us—our moods, our thoughts, and even our perspectives. With this in mind, this meant focusing on lyrics that resonated with my values—words that felt palatable or aligned with who I am or aspire to be.

While I succeeded in cutting back on songs I felt wasn’t meaningful or in tune with my sense of self, this intentionality had an unintended side effect: I ended up sticking to a limited number of artists I already knew and loved. Over time, it felt like I had locked myself away from the vast world of music. When I came across some nice music on my social media, I started to feel like I was missing out on so much: the undiscovered talents, the beautiful voices, and the incredible sounds waiting to be explored.

This year, I’ve decided to change that. One of my musical goals is to explore more artists, dive into different genres, and discover new voices. For some, this might not seem like a big deal, but for me, it’s a challenge. It means stepping out of my comfort zone and opening my mind to the beauty and diversity of the music world.

I’ve already made a head start, and it’s been an exciting journey so far. During the first week of this year, I started downloading songs from artists I didn’t listen to before me, and one of my favourite discoveries has been Tatiana Manaois. Her music is refreshing and aligns well with the kind of songs I enjoy. It’s only the beginning, but I’m already excited about where this goal will take me.

Another part of my musical goal is to create more playlists. To make the music experience more intentional and enjoyable. I love organising music to suit different activities, moods, and even genres. Whether it’s a playlist to keep me focused while working, one for a relaxed evening, or another for a burst of energy, having my music group this way creates a seamless listening flow.

I’ve always found it frustrating when a random song interrupts the mood I’m trying to set, and playlists are my solution to that. They allow me to immerse myself fully in whatever moment or emotion I’m trying to embrace, without the distraction of an out-of-place track.

These goals—exploring more artists and creating more personalised playlists—might seem small to some, but for me, they’re not. While I’ll always enjoy my current favourites, there’s something exciting about the idea of expanding my horizons and finding new sounds that speak to me.

I am excited to see how these goals shape my connection to music and deepen my appreciation for it.
