Greetings!
Is it only me that's attracted to seeing a movie via the cover photo of the movie? I'm sure it's not just me.
I stumbled upon this movie, Contorted, while I was searching for a particular movie, and the graphics caught my attention—I just couldn't skip it. Actually, I was searching for a horror movie, and upon seeing this, I bookmarked it. When I finally watched it, it made sense.
Contorted is a Korean movie released in 2022, and it's all about a particular family that moved into a house that was unusually cheap for the area, not knowing that the house was haunted. But is it just haunted? The ordeal that led to the house being haunted happened in a very unique way, and this family—the family of Mr. Choi—found themselves in the same category.
They have an adopted daughter, Hee-woo, who sees the ghosts in the house but finds it so hard to relate her experiences to her parents.
The mother was also seeing things and hearing noises in the house, but it was all a play on her mind due to how occupied her thoughts were. The father, however, was very different from the two of them but later got possessed by the spirits in the house through his mind.
The problem arose: who was going to save whom?
Opinions and Criticism:
I must admit, although I knew it was a horror movie and I should expect freaky and scary things, the first scenes of the movie got me freaked out and wondering what was wrong. That's a really good plot element—a good storyline that keeps the suspense alive until the end. The sounds and appearances of ghosts in the movie were genuinely creepy, even though not many heavy ghostly costumes were used.
I love how the movie portrayed the idea that spirits, demons, or evil can actually penetrate our thoughts when the mind is overloaded with so many troubling thoughts. That was the case for Mr. Choi and his wife.
At the beginning of the movie, we saw a man give Hee-woo a card, telling her to call him whenever she was in danger in the house. Towards the end of the movie, Hee-woo called the man to help out when her mother and father were trying to kill her due to how they were possessed. However, this man never showed up, and no part of him was seen again in the movie.
This really raises questions about the film because the character appeared to be important at the beginning but ended up irrelevant. Funny enough, no reason was given as to why the character never reappeared. Not only this, but a lot of points in the movie also needed more explanation. It would have been better if it were done as a series—or, let me say, one needs to watch it more than twice to really grasp some of the facts in the movie.
It's a nice movie, and I would rate it 5/10.
Thanks for reading.
