Another farming season is upon us again and this year I will be farming not just to feed my family alone. Commercial farming 🧺 done on a large scale goes along way to feed alot of people. One thing I will like to keep in mind as a slogan is that "Every body eats food even yet not everybody goes to farm" We cannot all be farmers or pick up thesame profession in life.
In the past farmers are seen as people in the lowest levels in life but today that notion has changed because we have seen the effects of how the shortage of agriculture can make everybody go hungry.
You can have all the money in the world but if a farmer refuses to sell his food to you, hunger is inevitable.
It will be a good thing to support farmers and those in the Agricultural sector. My country has suffered a great deal ever since it shifted from Agriculture having found crude oil.
There has been shortage of food and cash crop that has affected the country and populace in everyway.
My family has enjoyed some abundant supply of food stuff all the years round from the harvest from our subsistent farming.
Today myself and a team of people will be putting funds together to invest in some commercial farming.
While the financial plans for this is on going to see how much we can invest we have gone for site checking.
An acre of land is been leased for $12.6/ 20k naira.
We have a total of about 20acre for the part A section of the farm.
Since I can ot single handedly rent 20acre I have paired with some friends.
Far as the eyes can see is the land space. Trees are serving as a good guide and separation of each individuals acre of land.
The work load is divided among both myself, hired labourers and Equipments we will be renting.
Although I had wished that the government will do something about the diesel ⛽ pump price per liter.
This will be affecting our farming since a whole lot of money will be used to purchase the diesel that will be used by the tractor that will make the ridges.
A reduction in price of diesel will go along way to reduce the cost of production.
The first step of our farming is land preparation. I don't think that there is machine that can do that yet hence we have hired labourers who are using cutlasses and hoes to cut down the shrubs that have covered the place. A days clearing job is costing us $1.26/2000 per person per day.
The land is a fertile one that has been left to fallow for some 4years now and today we have begun work on this 20acre space for a start.
This can be expanded based on capital and other factors.
This has been one of my goals for years and taking a step to go into commercial farming that will feed alot of people in the long run is something that makes me feel fulfilled taking the very first step today.
The farm location is about 50mins drive from the main town where we are coming from which is quite a reasonable distance.
Alot of things are to be put into consideration when going into farming and while world has stated already, creating a years farming plan will be done alongside.
