A Necessary Evil.

There are so many things we can tag as unfair in the world today, but there is just nothing we can do about them because there are no better options than that unfair tradition we have always known. I believe many Nigerians can relate to the saying that "Life no balance," and that's just the situation of the world we live in today. Looking at things from a general perspective, humans, animals, and even plants are victims of numerous unfair treatments. However, if we look deeply, doing things otherwise might probably make no sense at all.

The use of animals for experiments in laboratories is one of those things many people tag as inhumane, and looking at things from their perspective, they have a good point. These animals have a life, they have families and shouldn't be made to go through any form of suffering.

Meanwhile, these animals have rights too, which must be respected and protected. Nevertheless, using animals for experiments is a necessary evil. It's not something that started today, and if there were to be a better alternative, I trust scientists would have given it a shot.

Scientists are humans too and have blood running in their veins. Many of them don't like seeing these animals die in the process of experimenting, but they don't have a choice. So regardless of what we think or believe about using animals for experiments, it can't be stopped since there isn't a better alternative yet.

In addition, if we are to make amendments to using animals for experiments, would it have made sense if humans were being used for these experiments?

It clearly makes no sense, and a very good percentage of the world population will never volunteer to be a test subject in a laboratory when there are animals that can serve as alternatives. Furthermore, the success of many experiments is not guaranteed even after 100 trials, so imagine how many humans will lose their lives daily, all in the name of trying to be fair or protecting animal rights.

We practically do not have better alternatives than using animals, and if today, using animals for tests becomes a crime, the world will struggle with creating lifesaving medicine for illnesses or diseases that might strike in the future.

The closest I have been to a laboratory where animals are used as test subjects is my TV, and honestly, it doesn't bother me because I know why these experiments must be done, plus rats are a big problem to people in this part of my world. I hunt them down in my apartment for destroying things, so I don't see any issues with them ending up in the laboratory.

It's even funny how this same set of people who condemn the use of animals slaughter these animals for food and even game but think it's unfair to use them for laboratory experiments.

    What am I driving at?

It's inhumane, unfair, and whatever we think it is, but using animals as test subjects is the best option we've got. I know it makes many animal lovers uncomfortable, but using humans won't make us comfortable in any way, or is there anyone who would be happy seeing their family members become test subjects in a laboratory?

I am not disputing the fact that we are trampling on these animal rights, but sometimes, we have to make difficult choices, especially when it has to do with medical science. However, the medical field is developing fast with the help of technology, and I hope that one day, there are better alternatives that wouldn't require hurting humans or animals while creating medicine or cures for diseases.
