Least Pygmy Squirrel | Exilisciurus exilis | https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/253485708 |
When observing birds in the primary forests of Sumatra, we often find interesting things other than birds, such as the squirrel species that I encountered, the Least Pygmy Squirrel (Exilisciurus exilis). This species is one of the small mammals that is often overlooked in the world of wildlife research. With a body size of only around 7-9 cm, this squirrel is recorded as one of the smallest squirrel species in the world. Although its body is tiny, its role in the tropical forest ecosystem is very important, especially as a seed disperser and forest ecosystem balancer.
The Least Pygmy Squirrel can be found in tropical forests in Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, and the surrounding areas. This species has a habitat preference in humid primary and secondary forests, especially in areas with large trees that have many gaps or cavities for shelter. Its activities tend to be arboreal, or more often found in trees than on the ground.
This species is grayish brown with faint lines along its body, making it difficult to see among the bark. In addition, this species is also a diurnal animal that is active during the day. They are very fast, and are often seen jumping from branch to branch in search of food.
These squirrels eat a variety of foods, including fruit, small insects, and seeds. They are also known as "little foresters," because of their habit of spreading seeds during their feeding activities.
Have you ever seen a squirrel like this, write your personal experience in the comments.
