The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood or Church of the Resurrection of Christ, is located in Saint Petersburg, on the banks of the Gribaedova canal, near the Russian Museum and Nevsky Avenue. Construction of the church began in 1883 under the reign of Alexander III, in honor of his father murdered two years earlier. The foundation stone was laid in October 1883, but the work was extended and the work was completed only in 1907. The funds necessary for its completion came from the coffers of the imperial family and various donations from individuals.
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was designed by architects I. Makáro and Alfred Parland. It is stylized in the Russian architectural spirit of the 16th and 17th centuries. More precisely in the Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, which was taken as inspiration for the design.
It is a building 81 meters high and its total area is 1642.35 square meters. The interiors surprise with their stunning decoration, for which more than twenty different minerals were used. Its decoration also has a lot of Italian marble, semi-precious stones, as well as gilded bronze and silver. The stone ornaments were specially made by master craftsmen from Saint Petersburg.
The impressive mosaics that cover a large part of the interiors draw powerful attention. These have been made with such artistic and technical skill that they make the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood an internationally admired monument. A great achievement of the architects was to incorporate the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood into the historic center of Saint Petersburg, without affecting the surrounding architecture.
In the western part of the building is the place where Alexander II was murdered and you can still see, even today, sacred relics stained with his blood.
In 1930 the Soviet authorities closed the church and it suffered the same fate as many others. In 1970 it became a branch of the state museum "St. Isaak's Cathedral". Currently, its restoration is almost complete. And it is today one of the most popular museums in Saint Petersburg, receiving almost a million visitors a year.
