El manga y el anime han tenido un impacto significativo en la cultura pop occidental. Estas dos formas de arte visual y narrativa son originarias de Japón.
Desde su llegada inicial fueron creciendo en popularidad, cautivando audiencias de todo el mundo y generando una fuerte influencia no sólo en el arte visual sino también en la moda, la tecnología, la música y la narrativa visual en general.
Las raíces del manga (comic al estilo japonés) y el anime (animaciones japonesas) se remontan al siglo XII y XII en Japón, pero no fue hasta el siglo XX que se popularizó más allá de sus fronteras.
El manga, atrapó la imaginación de los lectores occidentales con su estilo único y con su enfoque que se ampliaba a través de una gran cantidad de géneros y temáticas que lograron llenar la necesidad de una nueva forma de expresión visual y narrativa.

Por su parte, el anime se convirtió en una forma de entretenimiento el cual mezclaba una estética visual de gran impacto con complejas historias, donde pronto se pudo ver que los dibujos no eran sólo para niños sino también para el entretenimiento de los adultos.

Series como Dragon Ball, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Mazinger Z, por nombrar algunas, se convirtieron en éxitos mundiales, atrayendo más y más fans interesados en la cultura japonesa que se refleja en las historias y creando un fandom apasionado por las mismas.
Mientras más crecía el interés por el manga y el anime, más se veía su fuerte influencia en la moda donde muchos elementos propios de esta cultura se iban incorporando y aparecían nuevas tendencias inspiradas en sus personajes. La música pronto se vio influida también ya que los artistas agregaron estos elementos al sonido, actuaciones y videoclips.
La tecnología y la narrativa visual no quedarían exentas de su influencia. Los videojuegos adoptaron los elementos estéticos y temáticos en sus nuevas propuestas lo cual fue extendiéndose hasta la cinematografía. El arte y el diseño comenzaron a mostrar nuevas propuestas bajo la influencia de una generación de creadores que buscaban explorar y ampliar la forma tradicional de expresión visual incorporando estos elementos.
Con el paso del tiempo, la popularidad del manga y el anime no ha decaído. En pleno siglo XXI, gracias al uso de plataformas de streaming y a las redes sociales, ha ido en aumento y su alcance se ha ampliado, lo cual ha permitido que las nuevas generaciones conozcan este estilo de arte y se enamoren de su estética y sus historias.
Últimamente, he visto discusiones en grupos de ilustradores donde se cuestiona si los comics que se producen en occidente, influenciados por el manga y el anime, podrían ser llamados así ya que no son creados en Japón.
Desde mi punto de vista y tomando en cuenta que se ha ido llamando Manga al comic que sigue una serie de pautas o características propias de este estilo de narrativa visual, sería correcto llamarlo así ya que no se está considerando el lugar de elaboración sino las características estéticas y narrativas de esta corriente de comics.
Sería como cuestionar si el arte surrealista o abstracto, por poner algunos ejemplos, no deberían llamarse así porque son producidos en otros lugares del mundo diferente a donde nació la corriente artística sin importar si estos cumplen con las características del estilo.
Aunque esto sería un tema interesante para analizar y desarrollar en otro post.

Manga captured the imagination of Western readers with its unique style and its wide range of genres and themes, filling the need for a new form of visual and narrative expression.

On the other hand, anime became a form of entertainment that combined visually impactful aesthetics with complex stories, demonstrating that animations were not just for children but also for adult entertainment. Series such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, Sailor Moon, and Mazinger Z became global successes, attracting more and more fans interested in Japanese culture reflected in the stories and creating a passionate fandom.

As interest in manga and anime grew, their strong influence on fashion, music, technology, and visual storytelling became more apparent. Elements of this culture were incorporated into fashion, inspiring new trends, and artists integrated these elements into their music, performances, and music videos.
Technology and visual storytelling were not exempt from their influence. Video games adopted aesthetic and thematic elements in their new proposals, which extended to cinematography. Art and design began to show new proposals under the influence of creators seeking to explore and expand traditional forms of visual expression by incorporating these elements.
In the 21st century, with the use of streaming platforms and social media, the popularity of manga and anime has continued to grow, reaching new generations who have fallen in love with its aesthetics and stories.
Recently, there have been discussions in illustrator groups questioning whether comics produced in the West, influenced by manga and anime, could be called as such since they are not created in Japan.
From the perspective of considering comics following a set of guidelines or characteristics specific to this style of visual narrative, it would be correct to call them manga, irrespective of the place of creation.
This would be similar to questioning whether surrealistic or abstract art, for example, should not be called as such because they are produced in other parts of the world where the artistic stream was born.
