Día Familiar | Piscina + Empanadas

Nada como compartir con la familia. Desde niña he sido migraste, por lo tanto crecí lejos de mi familia, de mis hermanos, primos, tíos y abuelos, así que no fue fácil. Me acostumbre a celebrar los cumpleaños entre nosotros mismos (mis padres y mis otros hermanos) o simplemente no celebrarlos, me acostumbre a que nunca había como plan ir a donde los tíos o a donde la abuela, porque simplemente estábamos muy lejos.

Cuando regresé a Ecuador, me prometí aprovechar el tiempo perdido, pero no contaba con algo, el tiempo ya había hecho su jugada. Así como yo me acostumbré a estar sin ellos, se acostumbraron a estar si mí, así que toco volver a empezar, y aunque al principio con algunos pocos no fue fácil, con mis hermanos si lo fue y aprovechamos cada momento que tenemos juntos, aun cuando ya no podamos recuperar el tiempo perdido, podemos crear memorias nuevas del presente.

El domingo fuimos a la casa de mi hermano mayor, al que vemos un poco más, ya que vive a 3 cuadras de mi casa. Mi cuñada me escribió temprano para invitarnos a bañarnos en la piscina, principalmente por los niños y también coordinamos cocinar algo juntas, así que hicimos empanadas Venezolanas, hago la aclaratoria, ya que aquí en Ecuador también hay empanadas, pero son de plátano y mi cuñada tenía ganas de comer empanadas Venezolanas. Ella hizo el pollo y yo puse manos a la obra preparando 25 empanadas.

Los niños disfrutaron la piscina, desde que están de vacaciones, por el invierno no han podido salir, ya que las lluvias han sido constantes, al punto de haber inundaciones y afectados en varias partes de la Ciudad donde vivimos. Pero ayer, el día estuvo soleado y despejado, así que Ammy y Joaquin disfrutaron al 100 de la piscina, mientras que Amelie era feliz viendo desde la ventana, no quiso meterse al agua, tenía mucho miedo cuando la acercaban y por su condición, preferimos respetar su espacio y dejarla. Pasó la tarde viendo videos en la sala y a sus hermanos por la ventana.

Fue una tarde diferente y agradable, ademas de oportuna, ya que en invierno hace demasiado calor, aun cuando llueve, más aún cuando no.

Nothing compares to spending time with family.

Since I was a child, I have been a migrant, so I grew up far from my family—my siblings, cousins, uncles, and grandparents—which was not easy. I got used to celebrating birthdays just among ourselves (my parents and my other siblings) or simply not celebrating them at all. I got used to the fact that there was never a plan to visit my uncles or my grandmother because we were simply too far away.

When I returned to Ecuador, I promised myself to make up for lost time, but I hadn’t considered one thing: time had already played its hand. Just as I had gotten used to being without them, they had gotten used to being without me. So, I had to start over. While it wasn’t easy with some at first, with my siblings, it was, and we now make the most of every moment together. Even though we can’t recover the lost time, we can create new memories in the present.

On Sunday, we went to my eldest brother’s house—the one we see a little more often since he lives just three blocks away. My sister-in-law texted me early to invite us to go for a swim in the pool, mainly for the kids, and we also planned to cook something together. We decided to make Venezuelan empanadas—I make this distinction because here in Ecuador, there are also empanadas, but they’re made with plantain. My sister-in-law was craving Venezuelan empanadas, so she prepared the chicken filling while I got to work making 25 empanadas.

The kids had a great time in the pool. Since their vacation started, they hadn’t been able to go out because of the winter rains, which have been so constant that there have even been floods and damage in several parts of the city where we live. But yesterday, the weather was sunny and clear, so Ammy and Joaquin enjoyed the pool to the fullest. Meanwhile, Amelie was happy just watching from the window. She didn’t want to get in the water—she was too scared when we tried to bring her closer. Given her condition, we preferred to respect her space and let her be. She spent the afternoon watching videos in the living room while keeping an eye on her siblings through the window.

It was a different and pleasant afternoon—also very fitting, since the heat during winter is intense, whether it rains or not, and even more so when it doesn’t.
