Larry begins his look at today in history from Liberia. He finds out that on this day in 2012, Charles Taylor, Liberia's former president, was sentenced to 50 years in jail after being found guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes perpetrated during Sierra Leone's civil war.
From Liberia, Larry goes to the Dominican Republic. He finds out that on this day in 1961, Rafael Trujillo, an army lieutenant who became the Dominican Republic's dictator following a military coup in 1930, was assassinated.
From Dominican Republic, Larry goes to England. He finds out that on this day in 1980, Steven Gerrard, an English professional football (soccer) player and manager who was considered one of the world's most complete footballers in the early 2000s was born in Whiston, England.
Still in England, Larry finds out that on this day in 1963, Helen Sharman, a British scientist and astronaut, who was the first British person to travel into space, on a trip to the Soviet modular space station Mir, in May 1991 was born in Sheffield, England.
From England, Larry goes to Russia. He finds out that on this day in 1934, Aleksei Leonov, a Soviet cosmonaut who performed the first space walk was born in Listvyanka, Russia, U.S.S.R.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1431, during the Hundred Years' War, Joan of Arc led the French army to a historic victory against England at Orléans. However, she was accused of heresy and witchcraft and was executed by burning at the stake on this day in 1431.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
