Today I went to Kyoto Gyoen to sketch a plum grove. It had been a long time since I had sketched there, and I had prepared paints, brushes, and a sketchbook the day before, but I was exhausted just preparing. But I knew I couldn't do live painting if I couldn't do sketching, so I went out this morning after a good night's sleep.
They say that all tourist spots in Kyoto have become more crowded with tourists, but not so much in the morning.
Today I left my house at 8:00 a.m., took a bus from the nearest bus stop, and arrived at Karasuma-Imadegawa in about 10 minutes. This is the northwest side of Kyoto Gyoen. As I entered the Kyoto Gyoen from here, I met many people walking their dogs. The fresh morning air was delicious.
The photo below shows the gate called “Inui-gomon” where I entered the Gyoen.
After another 10-minute walk, we arrived at the plum grove. About 120 trees are planted in this plum grove, and they were almost in full bloom.
The two photos below show plum blossoms. One is a white plum and the other is a red plum.
In the plum grove, people who came in groups were chatting, and those who came alone were reading books or touching their phones, so I decided to do some sketching.
I started by drawing the branches and trunk of the plum tree in pencil. Plum tree branches are interesting to draw because they bend and grow sharply. I drew the white, pink, and red plum blossoms in the picture. However, I thought I should have painted the blue sky and the green trees in the background with darker colors. But at any rate, I was glad to be able to draw a sketch for the first time in a while. The photo below is my sketch of the plum grove.
After finishing my sketch, I sat down on a bench nearby and ate a croquette bun that I had bought at a convenience store and brought with me because I was hungry. I hid it in my bag and ate it. I hid it in my bag because I thought that if I didn't, a kite would take it away. Fortunately, no dragonflies came, but a few pigeons gathered around me and seemed to be waiting for me to drop a piece of bread crumb or something.
Anyway, it was sunny and warm today, and I am glad I went out.

今日は京都御苑へ梅林のスケッチに行ってきました。久しぶりのスケッチで、前日から絵の具や筆、スケッチブックなど準備していたのですが、準備だけで疲れました。でもスケッチができなくてライブペインティングなんかできないと思い、前の晩はよく寝て今朝出かけました。
京都の観光地はどこも観光客が多くなったと言いますが、朝のうちはそうでもありません。
今日私は朝8時に自宅を出て最寄りのバス停からバスに乗り、10分ほどで烏丸今出川に着きました。ここが京都御苑の北西側にあたります。ここから京都御苑に入ると犬の散歩をしている人に多く出会いました。清々しい朝の空気が美味しかったです。
下の写真は私が御苑に入った乾御門という門です。
そしてまた10分ほど歩くと梅林に着きました。約120本がこの梅林に植えられているそうですがほぼ満開でした。
下の２つの写真は梅の花です。白梅と、紅梅です。
梅林ではグループで来た人がおしゃべりしていたり、ひとりで来た人が本を読んだりスマホを触ったりと思い思いに過ごしていたので、私はスケッチをすることにしました。
スケッチはまず鉛筆で梅の木の枝と幹を描きました。梅の枝は鋭く曲がったり伸びたりしているから描いていて面白いです。画面の中に白、ピンク、紅と梅の花が入るように描きました。ただバックの青空や緑の木をもう少し濃い色で描けばよかったなと思いました。でもとりあえず久しぶりにスケッチが描けてよかったです。下の写真は私が描いた梅林のスケッチです。
スケッチを終えて近くのベンチに座り、お腹が空いたのでコンビニで買って持ってきていたコロッケパンを食べました。鞄の中に隠して食べました。そうしないとトンビに取られると思ったからです。幸いトンビは来ませんでしたが、ハトが数羽私の周りに集まって、パンくずでも落とさないかと待ち構えているようでした。
とにかく今日はよく晴れて暖かくなって、お出かけしてよかったです。
