Hello everyone
Greetings to you all beautiful and creative friends in this community, I hope you are all doing great just as I am doing here, it's feels great to share with you today the making of an outfit for my mother in-law, I'm on a cross road and don't know for now what to make for her since I was asked to use my own discretion.
There is this group in church which my mother in-law is part of and as it is, towards the end of the year, most group and associations get to do their end of the year party, it's usually a celebration that they put on same fabric to celebrate with lots of eating and dancing, this fabric was given to my mother in-law for the celebration and she gave it to me to make her an outfit. Initially, I usually make simple gown for her but this time, she didn't want a gown instead she insisted on skirt and blouse, well I have decided to make the skirt first then think of the type of blouse to make later.
Though, I have been making beautiful blouses but for a Grandma, it doesn't need too be too flashy, so I really need to think of something simple and yet beautiful to make.
Let me take you through the cutting and sewing process of the 6 pieces skirt I made with and elastic band on the two sides of the waist. It's will be easy to wear with an elastic band than a zipper.
With the 6 yards of Ankara fabric, I folded it with the fullness I wanted at the base which is 7" from which I cut out the center front using the nipple to nipple measurement with seam allowance from the waist line down to the knee line before connecting it to the full length.
The center front piece was used to cut out the 4 sides of the front and back by subtracting the center front measurement from the hip circumference measurement with 1" seam allowance, the waist and hip were cut with same measurement since I'm adding elastic band on the waist.
The same center front was used to cut out the center back as well.
Two pieces of the side piece were sewn to the center front with ½" seam allowance on both sides.
The same process was done to the back piece after which the two were sewn together with 1" side seam allowance.
I went ahead to cut a short lining and sew it inside the skirt.
I cut out an elastic band of 8" and sew it on the dart leg of the front and back on both sides just as seen below.
Finally, the waist was folded in with ½" with the elastic band and I sew on it round, the hem of the skirt was also folded in and sewn round, this is the final outcome of the six pieces skirt I made for my mother in-law, I hope you like it.
