I was just a young girl, 11 years old, when the news came to my mother that my dad was involved in a car accident. I was with her but didn’t understand what was going on until they brought her body home and buried him right away, as was our custom in the North. I didn’t know what kind of pain had engulfed me, but I can tell that my mother was very sorrowful; she wasn’t crying, probably because she lost strength, but her eyes spoke everything I needed to know about her pain.
14 years later, I found myself in the photography profession. Now that I’m 25 years old, I struggle to make ends meet, which means taking care of my bills and those of my mother. Most of the time when I’m out there, it’s like people look at me, but their sight passes through me. I gave it my best shot, and my editing skills are top-notch, so I wonder why I’m mostly underpaid for a job or refuse a job.
I just got rejected for another job, and I was on my way home. I walk under the hot sun as I kick the dust in my way due to frustration. I stood by the roadside and gave a loud scream because no one was around. Unknown to me, there was a back car upfront with tinted glass, and a man was in the car watching me scream. I was at the point when he opened the car and said, "Hello, young lady, are you ok?”
At first, I wanted to ignore him, but what would happen to me again? So I decided to vent all my frustration to him. He asked to see my work, and I showed him. “Beautiful; these are amazing,” he said. He told me something I had never imagined before. Then he said, "Value attracts value. Anyway, I’m Davido, and I have to go now."
I got home and searched for what tribes bore such a name; it was only after I met him that I knew what I wanted.
