In case you have been living under a rock for the last several months, Sony and Arrowhead released a cross platform title called Helldivers 2. It being a surprise hit, copies selling like hot cakes in a cold lumberjack camp, some things slipped through the cracks at launch. Namely, a little detail that would require players to log in using a PlayStation Network account, even if Helldivers 2 was purchased through Steam on PC. A week or so ago, Sony decided to enforce that little detail, even going as far as removing the game from digital store fronts. In the last day or so, as of this writing, Sony has backtracked a bit due to demand from fans. The question is, for how long though?
Gamers Won a Battle but Not the War
It is indeed a great day for Helldivers 2 fans, it is not every day gamers get a company the size of Sony to change policy. The problem is a company as big as Sony will play nice for a bit while they strategize new tactics. This war between requiring PSN accounts to play Sony games on PC is far from over.
Part of this problem is amplified by the fac that, according to Arstechnica.com, the PlayStation Network is not offered in many countries.
Helldivers 2 was delisted in over 170 countries on Steam as the platform works through countless refund requests. According to PCGamer.com, the countries Helldivers 2 was delisted on Steam are also countries where PlayStation Network is not offered.
That is all corporations understand, money. If something is costing them money, they change direction (just look at Wendy’s and the whole “dynamic pricing” on their food for further proof).
Changes Take a Revolution
Sony took to X/Twitter on April 5th to state they heard gamers and are not going to enforce the Steam/PlayStation Network connection that would have started on May 30th, 2024. Heard as in they saw they were losing money.
According to Engadget.com, over 200,000 negative reviews hit the Helldivers 2 listing on Steam after the account connection was made public.
This is just proof that if people come together for a common cause things can change for the better.
