Le tengo un enorme temor a las adaptaciones que, tras un éxito arrollador, le hacen a libros, videojuegos o series animadas. Algunas adaptaciones tienen mucho éxito, como es el caso de The Last of Us o Game of Thrones, pero otras, con el perdón de la palabra, son una auténtica basura. I have a huge fear of the adaptations that, after an overwhelming success, are made to books, videogames or animated series. Some adaptations are very successful, as in the case of The Last of Us or Game of Thrones, but others, if you'll excuse the word, are absolute garbage. I'll start with the fidelity of this Live Action with respect to the series. There was a greater effort to preserve some characteristics of the main characters, the elemental nations, the spirits and the entire universe. However, in the process they ended up jettisoning the complexity that characterized each of these elements. I couldn't be watching the episodes without thinking about the simplicity of the performances or the lack of charisma that came from them. I felt no connection to anything, except for the occasional moment where I said:"Okay, this did happen in the animated series, but...".
But I still didn't like it. I hated the parts they left out and other parts they included. Aang dancing in the air in the first scene of the movie? I really hated that, XD. The costumes looked like Sitcom costumes: something about these didn't quite sit right with me. I understand that bringing an animated series to Live Action can be difficult, but I always remember The Last of Us phenomenon: somehow, it can't always be the excuse.

La trama de esta primera temporada se enfoca en el libro del agua, aunque con algunos elementos del libro tierra. Estos "libros" funcionan en la serie animada como interludios a la historia, dividida en un total de 61 episodios, suficiente material como para esbozar una adaptación elegante y astuta. Albert Kim es quien se encarga de dirigir este proyecto de Netflix que, hasta ahora, le ha quedado bastante grande, al menos a mí parecer.
Y es que, con una historia tan compleja y un universo tan rico, es bastante difícil permanecer fiel a una obra animada que mantuvo el entusiasmo en su época. Sobre todo, se necesita bastante ingenio para no alterar la trayectoria de una obra que cautivó en su versión original. A la adaptación de Netflix le faltó más carisma, más lógica de fidelidad. Los guiños no fueron suficientes, los efectos especiales tampoco. Al fin y al cabo, solo encontré otra decepción que terminó por ayudarme decidir no volver a ver la serie, a menos que (y lo dudo) retome un camino más ingenioso en su segunda temporada.

The plot of this first season focuses on the water book, although with some elements of the earth book. I expected more when I saw my favorite characters incarnated: I didn't like Azula's character at all, who in my childhood and now in my adulthood is still my great favorite.
