Welcome to the GenZ generation, where what we listen to no longer matters once it has some beats and rhythms we can shake bodies to. The lyrics in songs can impact lives both positively and negatively; the type of songs we listen to will determine what gets stuck in our heads because, truth be told, the music stays longer in the brain than movies or any other thing. As for me, I choose the songs I listen to carefully because I know the capability with which music can travel in one's life and define such an individual.
There is someone I know who is into music, but I can never download or stream his songs online because they are full of vulgar words that are not healthy for a child to listen to. I can't play his songs where my younger siblings are seated because his lyrics are just too nonsensical to me. Yet people listen to him and cheer up the nonsense he is singing. I listen to hip-hop quite right, but I make sure to choose them wisely; there are some artists that I can never listen to because of how they sing and the wording in their songs.
Gone are the days when artists sang with experience, showcasing their rich culture, correcting evil characters and behaviors with their songs, sending out warnings in the form of songs, and teaching good morals through songs. All these are lost in this generation's music; we only dance and nothing else. I am disappointed that these days, gospel artists are now bringing the secular style of singing into songs, giving out ridiculous slang that will keep one wondering where it was coming from. Sometimes I ask where we've got it all wrong in this generation.
If I were to judge the songs we listen to now, I would suggest a ban on every song whose lyrics don't communicate a positive message to the listeners. If artists saw that their songs were not released for people to listen to, thereby reducing their income, then others would do the right thing and set good records instead of releasing songs with negative impacts on society. Funny enough, all these songs are what interest the populace; those that teach morals are not being appreciated; they are being seen as old school, whereas the ones with negative impacts are being streamed from time to time, thereby depositing millions into the accounts of artists. This gives them the encouragement they need to go on producing songs with irrelevant lyrics with just good beats and rhythms.
There should be a law or laws binding the quality and lyrics of the songs being released. Any song that didn't follow the stated laws and went ahead to release his or her songs should be banned from all social media platforms and music-promoting platforms with fines following suit, which means there should be a penalty for such acts. If we listen to such music in this generation, I wonder what the coming generations will listen to. It saddens my heart to see children singing loudly to songs that have no meaning and yet be proud of them, and these songs are being played in every function.
