Luleti Faruk: A Journey on Wheels
In the heart of Uganda, nestled within the vibrant streets of Kitintale, I Luleti Faruk grew up surrounded by the hum of bustling markets, the laughter of children, and the warmth of a close-knit community. Born in 1996, my life was shaped by the challenges and joys of suburban Kampala, where dreams often danced in rhythm with reality.
Kitintale, known for its poor ghetto culture and tight community bonds, was also home to something unique—Uganda’s first skatepark. Built in 2005 by a group of visionary people, the skatepark became a beacon of creativity and hope. In 2015, at the age of 19, I stumbled upon this haven and was instantly captivated. The sight of skaters gliding effortlessly across ramps and pulling off daring tricks was mesmerizing. I knew I had found my calling.
However, my journey into skateboarding wasn’t smooth. Coming from modest means, affording a skateboard was a struggle. I spent countless days at the skatepark, watching, learning, and borrowing boards from generous skaters. Determined to own a skateboard, I took on odd jobs, from washing cars to cleaning company toilets. Every shilling I earned brought me closer to my dream.
Finally, after months of perseverance, I got my first skateboard—a second-hand, slightly battered board that became my prized possession. It wasn’t just a tool for skating; it symbolized my grit and determination. From that day forward, i practiced relentlessly, often skating from dawn until dusk.
Over the years, I became a fixture at the Kitintale skatepark. My skills flourished, and so did my passion for the sport. Skateboarding was more than a hobby; it became a way of life, a means to escape the challenges of daily life, and a way to express myself.
My story spread across Kitintale, inspiring other young people to pick up skateboarding. I began mentoring children at the skatepark, teaching them not just tricks and techniques but also resilience and the value of hard work.
Today, with over 11 years of skating experience, I am not just a skater but a role model in my community. my journey from a boy who hustled to get his first board to a seasoned skater embodies the spirit of determination. As I continues to skate, my dreams of expanding Uganda’s skateboarding culture, opening more skateparks, and providing skateboards to underprivileged youth.
My life is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance, proving that with dedication and hard work, even the most humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements, though still with some life hustles along, i keep skating.
