December 31st easily has to be one of my weird days. The hours that led into the New Year were spent doing things that I’ve not done in a pretty long time. In my post yesterday, I talked about how I was subtly looking forward to getting back to work once my holiday was over. But I guess I still couldn’t wait for the weekend to roll around because I ended up doing something work-related yesterday.
I almost didn’t go out yesterday, but then, I found out that I needed to make a trip to the bank to fix an ATM card issue. I tried it via their app and also via a customer care representative, but none worked. My messages via the app went unanswered and they didn’t even pick up my calls when I called their customer care. I guess all their workers had gone off for the holidays as well.
Anyway, the trip to the bank didn’t go as planned and it turned out to be more of a major issue than I imagined it to be. I was told to return with some major documents if I wanted to move forward with my case. However, the 31st was a partial public holiday and as such, the bank was only going to be open until 12 noon. I knew that if I returned home to pick up the documents, I wouldn’t make it back in time to continue the process. Hell, even if I started it, I wouldn’t be able to finish it.
So, I decided to put off my next appointment to either Thursday or Friday, by then banks would be fully operational once again and the holiday spirit would be dying out. It was only after all this was concluded that I left the bank and returned home. However, that only lasted for a short while because I soon got a visitor.
It wasn’t just anybody, it was my high school friend. The minute he learned that I was around, he said he was going to come see me. He came around and it was so great to have him around and reminisce about the old days together. It reminded me of a time when we could simply lounge around doing nothing but talk and talk. I guess that’s one of the perks of growing up, even talking becomes expensive.
Soon, night fell and it was time for me to go off to vigil. I went with my family and it was a pretty awesome experience. The mass was dope and there was a lot of singing and dancing that was used to step into the New Year. This was a good thing because it meant that I spent the first few minutes of the year in the church. The last time this happened was probably three years ago-ish!
Back in school, the place I lived was not really conducive to night movements. While my area was secure to an extent, the main issue was the area between where I lived and the church I was going to attend. Also, at the time, crashing at the homes of others wasn’t usually an option. So, just to avoid starting off the year with stories that touch, I just refrain from attending the New Year Vigils and simply attend the morning mass-ish.
Well, I’m not in my school environment anymore and I can go to any vigil I want. Just like with Christmas, it went without a hitch and it was a load of fun. There were loads of people on the road who were blowing knockouts and shooting off fireworks in the air, some were hosting street parties and listening to really loud music. It was insane.
By then, my phone had been buzzing and ringing with calls and messages, so when I got home, I answered the little that I could, and went straight off to sleep. Now that I’ve woken up, the first thing I did was reply to the rest of the messages, wishing as many people as I can a Happy New Year, and now I’m right here, punching away at my keyboard as I give an account of how the day went.
It was an exciting experience, everything about this holiday has been exciting. However, it would begin to die down now and people will finally return to their lives. I’m happy to be in 2025 and I look forward to everything this year will have to offer.
Happy New Year to you all, my family! And I wish each and every one of us a prosperous one!
