Watching someone you love go through mood swings can be heartbreaking

    Cynthia G. Last

I have known a person in my life who has bipolar. But sadly I will not disclose the name for privacy reasons. I have known him for so long and know everything about the person. His condition started during his college days.

    ]

He was the eldest son who came from the mountain barangay of Dumanjug. He is a genius and loves to read. He has been a consistent honor student. His family was not perfect. He grew up witnessing the chaotic scene of his parents. A father is addicted to all types of gambling. A mother who only supported him and all his siblings to finish college.

    Coping mechanism

During his third year of college manic attacks began. The family thought someone had cast witchcraft on him. He did not eat food for fifteen days and had no sleep at all. It was when he was about to close his eyes and thank God for giving him a chance to live in this world. For three days he fell into a deep sleep and when he was awakened he asked for food and his strength came back. He was diagnosed with bipolar depression caused by his father's irresponsibility and kept it in his heart for a long period.

After two years of being well, we met in the seminary. Bombarded by so many medicines he took he still graduated with honors. He got married to a lady who accepted him for who he was.

They lived together for eleven years in a normal setting, with no triggers, no manic attacks no showing of bipolar disorder. They lived happily together not until a day came when all of us were shocked. A manic attack comes in when we tend to forget the triggers ahead.

Due to so much stress in the Deped community and some problems arising from his family, it slowly came back. The wife thought it would never come back again so she forgot to prepare for it. Not even a medication was taken for a long time. Tears keep flowing from the wife's eyes seeing a different person in front of her. Good thing we contacted a doctor immediately and after two weeks he became better.

After those days almost every year, there were trigger attacks. The wife is always aware when the husband manifests some. She always sees to it that extreme manic attacks will not happen again. She took care of her husband, and even she gave up her job.

    What is bipolar disorder

It is a constant switch of moods from an extremely high level of happiness, anger, energy, etc. into a depressed, lonely, sad person.

    How to handle them?

You must be attentive to all he has been doing. You must be honest if they ask you about their actions. You must be willing to listen and tell them openly what they are doing. You must show love and acceptance and never laugh at their situations.

    What causes bipolar

It is caused by stress, genetics, brain chemistry, fatigue, trauma, and depression.

    Is there a treatment?

Good and enough sleep is one of the best treatments for bipolar patients. A mood swing stabilizer tablet is another way to control moods. It is not curable but controllable if you create a more loving, understanding, and stick to the daily schedule of activities.

What kind of person has bipolar?

Different levels are shown on different people but for the wife she has a loving and responsible husband. A God-fearing and well-mannered person giving everything for his family.

Right now the wife sees to it that every time triggers are shown she is always ready to respond and help the triggers into a stable mood.

It is now one of the rampant disorders. Most women have it and almost 1 in 100 adults has this disorder. It has different stages bipolar 1 is the worst, bipolar 2 is moderate, and bipolar 3 is the lowest. Many teenagers today are having this disorder due to lack of communication, and not being accepted. Sad but true.

Used by God to encourage others

Living a normal life is out of reach but it is possible if you show care and more love. Having bipolar is not a choice but a chance to show them that they are accepted, loved, and not to be ashamed of.
I hope you have learned from this story, Check yourself or your members of the family that show the above triggers and communicate with them what they feel.

These are all my personal experiences and studies of having a bipolar person around me.

Thank you for taking the time to read, That would be all for today.
