Every Disappointment is a blessing. Don't you think so?

"Every Disappointment is a blessing" is a phrase that I grew up with after life dealt with me academically in my high school days. I remember one of those scenarios when our teacher was admonishing us to keep pushing irrespective of the constant failures in our final term exams (WAEC & NECO). A lady in our midst chipped in, "Every disappointment is a blessing," and she said it, rooting it in how we met new friends in our lives—friends we wouldn't have met if we had passed the exams on the first attempt. It sounds funny, but that is just the real fact.

Disappointment happens, but if you look closely, the aftermath is always something to thank God for—maybe through the lessons learned or the result that later came forth.

A Time That I Disappointed Someone

I have disappointed people countless times, to the point that I cannot even remember some of those moments because most of them happened unintentionally, while some I did intentionally.

There is a neighbor in my compound who was fond of sending me on errands, and it surprises me how comfortable he was with that lifestyle. He does menial jobs and leaves the house very early, as early as 6:00 a.m. He is into sports betting (gambling) and is fond of sending me betting codes to play for him when he has gone to work.

One particular period, the errands became rampant—he was doing it every day, sending me to a betting shop to play the games for him as if I did not have work to do. That period, I decided to disappoint him as a way of telling him that I was no longer interested in his doings.

He sent me the codes as he usually did, dropped N200 for me to use in betting the game. That day, I deliberately decided not to go.

When he came back in the evening, he rushed in to collect the slip, but hey, he was disappointed when I told him that I was not chanced to go out. I saw the look on his face—he felt really bad. He smacked his hand on the table and muttered, "Ohhhh! This game that I was sure of." I smiled and did not say anything.

The weekend after that day, when all the matches he was supposed to bet on had been played, he came to me and said I had saved him from losing the money because all the matches he was to bet on went against his predictions. Isn't that a blessing? Lol.

This did not happen once or twice—no, I did it to him many times until he got the signal that I was no longer ready to be sent on such errands.

A Time That I Was Disappointed

Like I said, I do not take disappointments to heart too much whenever they happen. I just accept them as a way of life because, yes, disappointment is part of life.

Sometime last year, I needed money badly to fix an urgent issue I was facing. I met a friend I was so sure would help me, but hey, the friend kept beating around the bush with many jokes and excuses. I felt disappointed and left. The friend has the money to borrow out, so it was not like what you're thinking.

I was in pain at that moment—no lies—but I just had to let go.
