Manhua Review: Disastrous Necromancer

Disastrous Necromancer is a fantasy, action and adventure manhua that features an overpowered reserved protagonist with edge lord powers that has less personality development than supporting characters. If you've read Solo Leveling manhwa or watch the anime, you can consider this the failed cousin trying to repeat the formula but failed the assignment.

Once you get passed the plot below, the spoilers will contain paragraphs of how I'll be convincing you to save yourself 70+ chapters of nothing.

Set in a world covered in a barrier protecting it from the terrors of the abyss, Lin Moyu unlocks the Necromancer profession, a god-level profession that no one else has seen in history. He aims to get into Xia Jing Academy and follow his genius sister's footsteps. This was always his main goal at first but after a series of getting mixed up with conflicts he didn't ask for, he finds himself tied up to greater conspiracies.

    ![SPOILER]
Lin Moyu as a character can be summarized with one word "Bland". The story suffers from the overuse of tropes such as overpowered main character, silent and mysterious, and everyone else is either amazed by his feats or just want him dead. He is a Gary Stu but more reserved as his saving grace. Right from chapter 1, we see him getting built up from expositions of how he's the school's genius, how he achieved a unique profession, has a sister that is a prodigy, and people don't like how he's the quiet type that won't give anyone the time of day.

Fast forward several chapter in, the only growth Lin Moyu ever gets is his levels, knowledge and mastery of his profession advancing, character wise, he's still going to be the silent, composed, and overpowered main character that saves the day without a problem. He's not the boastful type and only speaks when he needs to. The problem with him as a character is how everything about him is flawless and unrelatable like the author just set this guy up already in complete in one package and his journey throughout the story is just a formality that good conquers all. The only semblance of a human I see in him is his sis complex and even that needs tweaking.

The formula for every conflict Lin Moyu encounters is the opposing side shows off their prowess and intimidate the bystanders, Lin's comrades steps up to do something, snaps his fingers to solve everything, and then gets awe, envy and praise of the onlookers. This keeps up for 70+ chapters and you'll get sick of it already before the 20 chapter mark given how redundant this formula is. At least he's not cocky which makes it a little bearable. He's level headed and too perfect to be relatable.

I was hoping at least the supporting cast had some character growth with the limited screen time they had, but nope, it's either they do well initially and get saved or get saved instantly. Lin Moyu saves the day and it's just tiring to expect anything else at this point. The only thing I am looking forward to is how their world's lore unfolds because there's not much to go on from the protagonist, you know they will win anyway.

Take the elements of Solo Leveling and reduce the personality and increase the overpowered traits, you'll get this manhua. But at least the art style is ok.
