Sewing, Gardening, and Caring: Making the Most of My Off Day

If you’ve been following my blog recently, you might remember that I shared my weekly and weekend schedule. As I mentioned earlier, my weekends are primarily reserved for my fashion design work and working in the yard, where we cultivate crops and rear animals.

Today, being my off day, I didn’t go to my regular job. Instead, I focused on my fashion design work. A client had given me fabric to sew a dress for her, which she plans to wear to her friend’s wedding ceremony. After collecting the fabric, I charged her a fair amount for the work. Since my time was limited today, I only managed to cut the fabric into the necessary parts and set everything up for sewing. I plan to dedicate more time to completing the sewing tomorrow.

Apart from working on the fabric, I also spent a good portion of the day in the garden. I prepared some parts of the land that my students had cleared earlier. My task was to remove unwanted weeds and debris from the area to make it ready for planting cassava and peppers. Since we have a large piece of land, it was easy to allocate specific portions for different crops. One section was designated for cassava, while another was set aside for vegetables.

After preparing the land, I attended to the crops we had already planted. I watered the plantain trees, which we planted a few weeks ago. With no rainfall recently, I felt it was important to keep them hydrated. I also checked on the pawpaw trees we planted a few months ago. Seeing them start to bear fruit filled me with excitement—it’s always rewarding to witness the results of our hard work in the garden.

In addition to tending to the crops, I spent some time looking after the animals in our backyard. We rear chickens, and one of our hens began laying eggs a couple of months ago. She managed to hatch 10 chicks, but unfortunately, only two of them survived and grew to maturity. Despite this, it’s still satisfying to see them thriving. Today, I made sure all the animals were well-fed and comfortable.

Looking back, today was quite productive. While I didn’t finish the dress I’m working on, I made good progress by cutting the fabric and preparing it for sewing. The time spent in the garden was equally fulfilling. Preparing the land for planting cassava and peppers, watering the plantains, and seeing the pawpaw trees bearing fruit were all highlights of the day. Caring for the animals and ensuring they are healthy and well-fed was also an important part of my routine.
